Drums Girls And Dangerous Pie Summary
Envision reading a satisfying novel that is very relatable. Then a sudden realization comes to mind that the title of the book makes absolutely no sense.
The book, Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie by Jordan Sonnenblick is about a thirteen-year old boy named Steven, who is a percussionist in band and the high school jazz band. His life changes when his annoying little brother is diagnosed with leukemia. The meaning of the novel’s name, Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie represents Steven’s life. For example, the event in the book that connects to the title is that Steven had been taking drum lessons from percussion teacher, Mr Stoll since he was 8 years old (Sonnenblick 186). This is relates to the title because playing the drums has been apart

(I almost did during class.) There were many funny stories in this book. One of them was how Les Hite fires band members. Instead of firing just one person, he would fire the whole band and then hire back the men he wanted. He would say, "I'm breaking up my band, everybody's fired," and then say, "I want you, you, and you in my new band." He said it was better than pointing at one person and telling them to get out. That's exactly what happened to Dizzy. Another was when Basie's band was France, and Buddy Tate got the wrong interpreter. They went to Lyon and Jimmy Rushing was ordering for them. So they go to the restaurant and Jimmy talked to waitress to order some weal chops. The waitress goes away and brings back six hard boiled eggs. Jimmy talks to her again and comes back with more eggs but fried. They start arguing saying that the waitress can't speak English. She over heard the conversation and comes back and says, "Excuse me, what would you like to have?" speaking better then either of them. One of my favorite chapters was…

Prominent American authors such as Mark Twain, Jonathan Edwards, and Nathan Hawthorne extensively emphasize in their works the role guilt plays in a person's conscience and society. In Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Twain builds up the plot by thoroughly describing the guilt Huck feels after he helps Jim, the slave, to run away. As a young boy, Huck disregards the society's values and chooses his own path, whether it be right or wrong. Much like his literary predecessors, Gary Soto deals with his own confrontation with the inner conscience after committing an act that he considers sinful. In his memoir "The Pie", Soto achieves to warn his audience of obtaining sinful temporary pleasures at the expense of eternal torture of the conscience by employing the use of literary devices such as metaphor, allusion, and motif.…

Every wondered how much a title or name can mean to someone? There is almost always a larger meaning behind the name of a company or the title of a book. Without truly studying and analyzing the title it may not seem that important. My book American Sniper has a very short title but when you truly look at the two words there is more to them than what may come to the mind at first. The word American, and sniper are both really important words that when put together have a very strong meaning especially to Chris Kyle.…

In the story “The Painted Door” by Sinclair Ross the title is significant. The title is symbolic, it ties into the plot, and it sums up the main event. When Ann says, “ ‘…It’s going to make the room a lot lighter’ ” she is talking about brightening the bedroom door (49). We paint to bring change and improve upon an old appearance, it is clear that that is what Ann is trying to accomplish with not only her bedroom door, but her life as well. She thinks that she is embarking on a new adventure by bringing change into her home and painting the door white, but in reality she is just beginning a new adventure behind the door. The title also ties into plot and sums up the main event because the painted door is a very significant part of the story. If Ann had chosen not to paint her bedroom door she would have never known John made it home, because John would have never had the paint marked on him. Ann would have thought that John had just collapsed on his way home but the suspicion of suicide is confirmed after she finds the white paint on his palm, “On the palm, white even against its frozen whiteness, was a little smear of paint” (67). It could be by chance that a smear of paint coated John’s palm or it could be a way of allowing Ann to know that his death was no accident. The title of the story “The Painted Door” is symbolic, and relevant to the plot and main event of the…

The title of a fiction book can be one of the most important aspects of the writing process because they often have a great influence on the story. In the book The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the title was created with the intention of using irony to characterize the main character. At first, when the reader begins the story, they see Mr. Jay Gatsby, a man of enormous wealth with a huge mansion, a very nice car and someone who throws crazy parties in which hundreds of strangers attended while seeing Gatsby as a glamorous and magnificent person because of the title and background knowledge of the book. However, the perception of Gatsby changes greatly throughout the book. As the story progresses the reader begins to see Gatsby as a sad man who is focused on recreating the past. By giving the title of “The Great…

In society, a great amount of importance is placed upon titles. Titles are created to define a person’s level of education, social class, or even family situation. While Nathaniel Hawthorne gives his male characters names with a significant amount of meaning behind them in “Young Goodman Brown”, he also makes use of symbolism in actions to further the complexity of each personality. Specifically, Young Goodman Brown starts off with name symbolism that paints him as a lovable young man, but as the story progresses and other types of symbolism come into play, a contrasting personality emerges from the young protagonist.…

Authors commonly choose title’s that bring deeper insight into a novel. It can certainly be seen in the novel Native Son that this is the case. Bigger Thomas, the novel’s main character, is a "native son" because he is born and raised as a black man in the U.S., so he’s a product of the country and its society. The Circumstances he is raised in have shaped the person he grows up to be. In other novels such as Brave New World it can also be seen how the environment a person grows up in affects who they become. Both main characters from these books exhibit naturalism and as a result both end up dying. In many ways, society can be held accountable for the actions that Bigger Thomas makes during the novel.…

As we know it is indubitably apparent that in works of literature that nothing is arbitrary, everything is specifically selected to best convey the story to the reader. In William Faulkner’s Absalom, Absalom this point is undoubtedly present in the title of the book. A book title is part of the overall impression an author is creating about a book. It can set a tone and create an expectation. The title of a book should match the tone of the book and it attracts attention. At first glance one might wonder why Faulkner would give his book such a title, but by looking closely and examining the title it becomes explicitly clear how the title “Absalom, Absalom” directly correlates with the theme of the book.…
