Philosopher Christian Wolff created the term monism as an attempt to “designate philosophical positions asserting either that everything is mental (idealism) or that everything is material (materialism), in order to eliminate the dichotomy of mind and body.” This means that he came up with the term to try and eliminate confusion between the body and they mind. The two modern types of monism are idealism and materialism. However, there is also something called neutral monism which is kind of like an in between of monism and dualism. It means that all things are not matter or mental, but neutral. Monism is also used in many religions across the world. For example, Hinduism and some branches of Christianity both believe that the gods or god creates all of reality. They believe that we are the result of someone else’s thoughts and therefore we exist. Buddhism suggests that we are “natural phenomena, living or dead, are without any svabhava, or ‘self-nature.’ Thus, all particulars are without any underlying essence and are essentially empty of being.” This means that we live and die, and we are only made up of monistic ideas. Monism is complex within itself and many people chose not to believe in it because of the fact that it has a great emphasis on …show more content…
This means that we are composed of stardust and atoms and neurons and cells. And that all of our mental processes are because of neurons and chemicals in the brain. This is the idea that things live and die and there is no afterlife. This is where science explains how we think and act, and it has nothing to do with anything like idealism, which would be the world is powered by your mind. One argument many people make is that physical bodies cannot perceive sensation. That is why materialists also believe that even the soul is composed of atoms. They believe that atoms collide with one another to produce sensation. Early on, materialism was not popular and almost “scandalous.” This was because of the heavy influence of religion. But the ideas started growing when there became more education and knowledge about science, particularly in Europe. It wasn’t until the 20th century that so much more research and knowledge came out. Materialists believe that nothing exists except for “atoms and empty space.” But they also believe that nothing happens by chance and everything happens for a reason and “nothing that is can be destroyed.” This would go along with the belief that everything is created from atoms and atoms are infinite. Atoms are also believed to change in “number, size, shape, and arrangement” to make different objects and
