Duluth Lifelong Learning
The Duluth campus of the University of Minnesota Medical School has healthcare goals that closely reflect my own. This campus is well-known for training physicians to serve rural Minnesota, which is the type of community I wish to be a part of. I love how this school emphasizes the ability of its medical students to be compassionate, empathetic, and be good communicators as there is more to being a physician than diagnosing patients. Duluth’s goal to produce physicians who provide for rural Minnesota and American Indian communities aligns well with my mission to provide healthcare to medically underserved areas. The opportunity to participate in rural medicine preceptorships and the smaller class size allows for collaboration making Duluth …show more content…
This is imperative in the medical field as new information and research is constantly bringing in additions to our current medical knowledge. The ability to continue learning throughout the career of a medical professional is a characteristic that drives me to become a physician. Lifelong learning is also something that originally inspired me to become a physician as my own medical treatment was greatly influenced by new medical advances. My desire to provide the most advanced care to medically underserved areas requires a drive to pursue new and innovative ideas and outreach that exist only through a dedication to lifelong learning.

The recreational and leisure activities that I enjoy mostly involve being outside. My friends and family can always count on me to be up for exploring and usually regret asking me because I could hike for hours! I love being outdoors and enjoy a wide variety of individual and team sports throughout the seasons. Kayaking, running, paddle boarding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and sand volleyball are just the beginning of my long list of activities I enjoy to participate in. Aside from the outdoors, I am an adventurous cook and make recipes of all styles.

My ultimate goal is to be a specialized doctor. I’m pursuing medicine as a result of my dad who died of his heart condition. Since he was young, his heart condition was unbeknownst to the family due to the absence of advanced medicine and facilities in our village in China. I was only one year old, when my father passed away. He couldn't make it because the nearest hospital was hours away and my family simply couldn’t afford the treatment. If he was diagnosed and treated early on, or if China had affordable, widespread hospitals and medical education this could have been…

“You’re transferring schools, Karina!”, my mother exclaimed a week before my sophomore year. Ultimately, this was the last thing I wanted to hear. I kept trying to decipher whether the news was good or bad. Moving to a Medical Magnet school smelled like defeat, and I was not fond of change. Public school was my forte. I was adapted to crowded lunch rooms, lively classes, and having classes such as art, band, up to ROTC. I wasn’t aware of it at the time, but there was something hidden behind my personal chaos. Overall, this life-altering experience is what shaped me into the dedicated pupil and aspiring health care professional I am today.…

The location of UA COM in Phoenix will offer me numerous learning opportunities like clinical experiences through nine clinical affiliates which will expose me to a wide array of people from various backgrounds, which is a vital part of being a physician in training. Serving people, especially underserved communities, is one of my top values that I share with UA COM-P and I hope that through volunteering at different health clinics like Wesley Community and Health Center, I will be able to enhance my skills by participating in hands-on patient care. I value culture as it regulates the conduct of a person and prepares them for the future. During the past years, public service helped me be more compassionate and ensure that I am always treating everyone with respect regardless of a person’s cultural or social background.…

My goals for residency are simple – to continuously learn in order to educate and heal. Although I have been involved in the community in various ways for many years, I am truly excited to start giving back to society from a different perspective – that of a physician, of a person’s first stop in their most vulnerable of times. Family Medicine is a broad field that will challenge me in many ways, but I am ready to enhance my knowledge in a program that fosters learning through a supportive, team approach where patients and their futures are the greatest concerns.…

An often overlooked malady that I plan to address is the plaguing societal desolation that affects too many families today. Lack of access to necessary commodities that each individual is entitled to, regardless of their socioeconomic status, have barricaded parents from reaching out to a doctor for the treatment their family desperately needs. These overbearing chains of injustice have weighed generations down, and may continue to do so if a physician doesn’t respond appropriately to the significance of their profession. To be the change requires future doctors to address the challenge, and stand as the counselor, the practitioner, and the friend. Because I can recognize the need to represent those who may become silent amidst tense medical discussion, I feel I can assist those who may have difficulty helping themselves. Thus, I don’t only want to be the apothecary, but the doctor who focuses her vocation on combating the systemic health issues that prevent families from receiving proper care. My motivation for pursuing a career in the medical field stretches far beyond fulfilling the role of a healer. I will strive to be a leader and an advocate for my patients. The greatest healer has taught us that a life of servitude is a life well lived, and this is just the path I wish to…

One of my personal career goals is to increase quality of care to lower socioeconomic neighborhoods. Growing up in Germany access to health care was universal; however, when I moved to the United States I realized that a large population does not have access to quality healthcare . During my many talks with our residents I have learned about the disparities in their patients whereas one group of patients receives an abundance of services another group only receives the bare minimum of health care services. Providing care to the medically needy has been one of the determining factors of becoming a physician. Participating in the program would provide me a greater understanding of the health disparities in the medical field as well as provide…

I am still incessantly obsessed with becoming a physician. But, unlike before, I’m finally able to take certain steps toward achieving my goal. I began volunteering at NYP-Weill Cornell Hospital over the summer and it helped me fill in some of the blanks that I previously had. One of the biggest advantages was the opportunity to talk with doctors of all specialities, nurses, aides and especially patients. It helped me see the world of the hospital from a variety of viewpoints. In addition to the patients, I was able to learn the different equipment and tools of the trade. As a student, just about anything caught my attention. Everything made me want to learn more. It made me want to inspect, investigate and become involved. The road that I have to take to wear the white coat won’t be easy and won’t be short. The first steps begin at Bronx Science and hopefully continue at Cornell University. Classes like Freud and the Invention of Psychoanalysis are the stepping-stones that will show me the complexity of the human body and mind and I can’t wait to dig…
