Dumas Rhetorical Strategies
The appeal to ethos, utilization of sarcasm, and employment of similes are some of the few rhetoric strategies that Dumas uses in order to establish a lively conversational tone in her second paragraph. The rhetoric strategy of appealing to ethos is demonstrated in the first sentence of the second paragraph where Dumas states "All of us immigrants knew that moving to America would be fraught with challenges..." In addition to the appeal to ethos, another rhetoric strategy which is persistent in Dumas' essay is the use of sarcasm. A perfect example of Dumas' use of witty humor occurs when she mentions the linguistic roots of America.
