The Durand line is referred to a 2,640km long porous border between Pakistan and Afghanistan. It was established in 1893 after an agreement between Sir Mortimer Durand of British India and Afghan Amir Abdur Rehman Khan. The line with mild modification after the Anglo-Afghan Treaty of 1919 was inherited by Pakistan as its modern border between the two countries, at the time of independence in 1947. The negative implication got worse by each passing day. Following events dragged Pakistan being the frontline state in war on international terrorism with a slogan of “Do More”. In doing more Pakistan suffered a heavy loss. More than 50,000 civilians, law enforcement personals, military personals had sacrificed their lives. Damage to the infra structure is in addition to this loss. The drone attacks were carried out in order to destroy the terrorist networks in the suspected areas. This resulted in the civilian casualties including children and women in large number. This developed hatred in the people of tribal areas for Pakistan. However most of the Pashtuns hold Pakistan responsible for their misery and helplessness as a result of this war. …show more content…
The Durand line and the creation of great Pushtunistan issue needs to be settled with bilateral talks and mutual understanding and obviously with the consent of the affected people. Both the countries should respect the independent sovereignty and should not create internal problems for each other (2). With reference to natural recourses of central Asia, Pakistan must mend its diplomatic relations with Afghanistan. On the other hand Afghanistan now needs foreign investors to rebuild the country. (2) Therefore, it must improve its relation with Pakistan as most of the Afghan trade is carried out through Pakistan. It must be understood by Afghan people that it was Pakistan who helped them during Soviet invasion. War on terror after 9/11 was not imposed by Pakistan rather by United States. Standing on the brink of civil war, Afghanistan must concentrate upon the establishment of an effective government and rehabilitation of the infrastructure rather than accusing others for all the misfortunes. ANA must be made capable to handle security issues
