Groupthink is a way of thinking the group members use when their desire for agreement or harmony over rides their motivation to try different things or consider other opinions. One type of groupthink is pressure for conformity. Pressure for conformity is when members pressure anyone in the group who expresses arguments against the group’s stereotypes, illusions, or commitments, viewing such oppositions as disloyalty. The Crucible is a historical play based on the events of the Salem witch trial in a small puritan colony located in Massachusetts in 1692. Abigail Williams is the main person who is accusing all these other people of practicing witchcraft and pressures a group of girls into believing what she says. She also had affair with John Proctor, whose wife has been accused of witchcraft. John proctor pressures one of Abigail’s minions, Mary Warren, to tell the court about how Abigail has been deceiving them, in order to try and save his wife’s life. The Crucible is an allegory for McCarthyism. McCarthyism is the practice of making accusations of disloyalty, subversion, or treason without proper regard for evidence. These ideals are achieved through hard work in an environment that has no barriers and offers equal opportunities for all. The coming of the American Dream came with the declaration of independence from England. People were filled with hope as they believed in the right to freedom, life and pursuing happiness. The idea was the creation of a nation in which people would be free from restrictions to pursue the life they want for themselves. When most people come across the term, witch hunts, they have the common propensity to imagine Satanism, witches brewing magical potions, and the Salem Witch Trials. The McCarthy Witch Hunts usually aren’t the first thing to pop up in their heads. During the late 1950’s and early 1960’s while the United States of America was fighting in the Cold War against the Soviet Union with hopes of protecting its sovereignties and freedoms, the growing fear of Communism and rising popularity of Anti-Communism threatened both the freedoms of individuals in America and the existing capitalist economic system. Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin had manipulated these fears and used them to justify his claim for power and fame. He began “witch hunts”, the seeking out of supposed threats to the United States. The…

Joseph McCarthy was the Senator of Wisconsin and as his term was ending, he knew his first term did not appeal to the people and he began to look for ways to secure his seat as the Senator for another term. During this time the people were already terrified of communism due to “the Soviet Union exploded its first atomic bomb. Later that year, Communist forces declared victory in the Chinese Civil War and established the People’s Republic of China. In 1950, North Korea’s Soviet-backed army invaded its pro-Western neighbors to the South; in response, the United States entered the conflict on the side of South Korea.” McCarthy then claimed he knew of 205 people in the State Department who were communists. The people became terrified and demanded that the list of those must be intensely interviewed to determine if they were in fact communists. The people on the list were not communists, but for two years he investigated them and it became known as McCarthyism. He also accused many public citizens such as newspaper writers who went against his views. Then in October of 1953, McCarthy began to go downhill. He accused the military to be communists. President Dwight D. Eisenhower decided that was enough and it was time for him to step in. “Through the televised investigations into the United States Army and the reporters’ attack, the nation grew to realize that McCarthy was “evil and unmatched in malice.”” In…

The Massachusetts Bay Experiment, although it started as a commercial enterprise, was highly grounded on religion. As John Winthrop said, they wanted to create a “city upon a hill,” or a utopia where God’s favor could be achieved. To attain this Promised Land, the Puritans devoted themselves to their church life and God. Spending hours at service every day, the Puritans were a closely-knit community due to the power of the church. Whenever any problem in the community emerged, the Puritans looked to the church to give them an answer. Thus, it is understandable that the witch trials in the Massachusetts area would become such hysteria. Though many historians have attributed the cause of the Salem Witch Trials to economic instability between the thriving seaports and the languishing agriculture and the political struggle between the highly patriarchal society and the independent women who started to defy the status quo of women, these are not the most compelling cause of the Salem Witch Trials. Through the system of the trials, the people who were prosecuted, and the reaction of those who were accused, it is evident that the most compelling reason of the Salem Witch Trials was the deeply religious nature of the Puritan’s society.…

Life in the 1950s was meant for fun, excitement, and innovation, especially in the areas of music and dance. After the World War II, people’s life began to prosper as well as the economy. The era of 1950s was the creation of rock and roll-the most popular music of the time. It is a blend of the Southern blues, gospel, country music, and a strong back beat. Also, country and western music were quite popular, and their popularity must be credited to the artists who sang them heartfully. As rock and roll displayed a different beat and mood, the styles of the dance also changed, and varied from place to place.
