Death With Dignity Act
Over the past two weeks we have been learning about different peoples views on the Death With Dignity Act. The Death With Dignity Act allows terminally ill Oregon residents to end their lives through voluntarily administering themselves lethal medication, given to them by a doctor for that purpose. Patients who want a prescription must be a resident of Oregon, Washington, or Vermont, 18 years or older, capable of making and communicating health care decisions for them-selves and diagnosed with 6 months, or less, to live. After first requesting a prescription from your doctor, you must wait for fifteen days and then go back and confirm that you still want to end your life. Your doctor then will make you wait 48 hours before you can pick up the lethal prescription. Hardwig believes that in certain circumstances you have a duty to end your life. I agree with Hardwig and believe that the Death With Dignity Act should be passed in all states because it is a humane way to end someone’s suffering.
I believe the law should be passed because a person should have the freedom to choose death when they are suffering too much from an incurable illness when even the treatment doesn’t enhance life quality. An incurable illness does terrible things to the body and causes immense amounts of pain. Many times the pain can be so severe that medication prescribed would not help alleviate it. The treatment might keep you alive but it will not cure you. You will be left in pain until death decides to come. At this point in their life they will probably be bed ridden and not be able to do much with their remaining time. They will lie in pain day after day, which is inhumane. They should be able to end their life with out any pain or issues.
Another reason that the law should be passed is because the patients should have the opportunity to die with dignity. This way they don’t have to fear losing their physical and/or mental capacities.
