Disaster strikes when an earthquake occurred at South America. The earthquake specifically hit the region of Chile. This unbelievable incident happened May 22 1960 about 19:11 GMT, 15:11 local time.
The earthquake was caused by the Nazca plate and the South American plate going against each other. Approximately 6,000 people were killed, 3,000 were injured and 2,000,000 were homeless. When the Government were trying to deal with the costs to fix everything, the overall sum was devastating. It was a shocking $550 million. It is said reportedly that this earthquake ranks a whopping 9.5 on the Richter scale. One of history’s worst. The amount of houses and buildings destroyed were far beyond something that could be fixed. The question was, what would the government do about it? So, the people head of Chile had a very tricky situation on their hands.
The government had brought cranes, tractors, bulldozers and all these mechanical structures to clear all the rubble. The emergency services also had to come in to help those injured. The ambulance roamed the country looking for any casualties and also clearing the corpses. It is said to be the one of the worst earthquakes in history. The government had to also bring tents and food supplies since all the survivors had nowhere to sleep and were all hungry. Rescue teams also had to be dispatched to any civilians trapped or unable to move. Many Chilean cities, including Puerto Montt, where noticeable subsidence occurred, including Valdivia, where nearly half of the buildings were rendered uninhabitable, sustained significant damage.
