Mamie and he had to continuously move from state to state. A year later, the couple had their first son, Doud Dwight Eisenhower. This same year America entered the First World War and Eisenhower was stationed in Gettysburg. After the war he became a major. However with this came a price. A year later, Doud Dwight died at the age of 3 from scarlet fever. In 1922, John Sheldon Doud, Eisenhower’s second son, was born. Eisenhower also became executive officer in the Panama Canal Zone. He went to The Command and General Staff School and graduated in 1926 with a firm reputation. Eisenhower continued his military career visiting places in the United State and countries like the Philippines. On D-Day of World War II Eisenhower was commanding the Allied forces in Normandy. In December of that same year, 1944, he was promoted to a five-star ranking. He became military governor of the U.S. Occupied Zone. A few months later he became the U.S. Army chief of the staff. Columbia University named Eisenhower president until 1950.
