Dylan Marlais Thomas was born in Swansea, Wales, in 1914. He was the son of Florence Hannah, a seamstress, and David John Thomas, a teacher. He was the youngest child in his family and he has a sister Nancy, who was eight years his elder. The red-brick semi-detached house at 5 Cwmdonkin Drive, in which Thomas was born and lived until he was 19, had been bought by his parents in the respectable area of the Uplands a few months before his birth. His childhood was spent in Swansea, and he knew the western suburbs of Swansea, particularly nearby Cwmdonkin Park very well. he liked to spend his summers at his maternal aunt Ann's dairy farm in Carmarthenshire.
