At this big ceremony the decisions are all announced to everyone in the community because everyone in the community must attend the ceremony. Jonas watches all his friends get assigned a profession and waits anxiously for his turn to come. When it is Jonas’s time for his profession to be announced, he is skipped. After the ceremony is over, the Chief Elder explains to Jonas he has been “selected.” This makes up the rising action in The Giver. Jonas has been selected to be the new Receiver of Memory.
The purpose of the Receiver of Memory is to hold important memories that can be used to advise the elders in the story. Being the Receiver of Memory comes with a big list of rules. Jonas goes into a deep state of frustration. He is frustrated with his community. After Jonas acknowledges the killing of children, his desire to change the community becomes robust, and he becomes more determined. Jonas can not accept how this society views human life, and he wants to do everything possible to his will to change the community. Jonas and The Giver come up with an escape plan. Jonas will fake his death and runaway to elsewhere. Once Jonas leaves the community, all his memories will be released upon the people in the community. This plan does not work because Jonas finds out the Gabriel is scheduled to be released the following
