Dystopian Literature: Character Analysis

In Dystopian literature, the society has a code of conduct that they live by. Few people in society question the power. In the book “The Giver,” Jonas, a 12 year old, earns the job of Receiver of memory. As he gets to know more about what has been taken from the society, he questions why. Another story, The Pedestrian, Mr.Mead, an older man, walks around the town. A police officer pulls him over and says that walking is obsolete. Mr.Mead is not understanding and questions the police officer, then he later realizes what has been taken away from society. In both of these texts, the character is able to realize what has been taken away because of the environment that they inhabit, community that they live with, and their mentality or mindset.

Jonas’ and Mead curiosity
The police officer wrote in his records, no job. This scene is talking about how the police officer doesn’t regard a writer as a job. This scene is important because this shows what is considered right and what's wrong, the code of conduct pretty much. The People in this society have removed certain job, so the job Mr.Mead had was obsolete. When Jonas starts talking to his father about whether he loves him, his mom is say that the word has no meaning. The character is showing that few words were removed from the dictionary and society. The word in obsolete. This matters because this scene shows what adjustments were made in the society to make it “better”. This scene also shows Jonas asking if the outside world, except for the giver.

In dystopian literature, the characters are affected by many things such as the environment that the characters inhabit, the community they lived in, and the mentality or mindset affects them both of the characters in both stories.
