Dystopian Society In The Giver By Lois Lowry

In The Giver, a science fictional novel by Lois Lowry, a boy named Jonas lives in a dystopian society. The society Jonas lives in is supposedly utopian society, a society that seems perfect. Jonas becomes the Receiver and he gets memories of what the world was like before his community. He notices that his community is actually the opposite of a utopian society, but that it is a dystopian society. Through all of his memories and time with The Giver, Jonas notices that he lives in a dystopian society. In Jonas’ society love does not exist because the families are not authentic families; the parents are assigned to each other, and they are assigned kids. There is no love or romance in the parents and kids relationships. Jonas thought that it was ok like this, but then he saw a memory of a family at christmas and saw how they acted with each other. He saw the love they all shared with each other. Additionally, the people do not know what love is. Every morning, after one gets the stirrings, one takes a stirring pill that takes away all feelings of love. The stirrings are what love is and the Elders have taken away love, causing the community to become a dystopian community. Instead of people dying of natural causes the community gives releases. One is released if they are a twin, old, have committed a major crime, or request a release. Additionally, release is murder. Jonas is the only one to understand that because he saw someone die during a war memory. When someone from the house of the old is about to be released they give that person a party. The community makes being released look like a good thing even though it is not. The people in Jonas’ community are not exposed to death. Even though death is sad it is part of life, and everyone should go through it to strengthen themselves
