following those things into oblivion. Colors. The names of birds. Things to eat. Finally the names of things one believed to be true. More fragile than he would have thought. How much was gone already? The sacred idiom shorn of its referents and so of its reality (McCarthy 75).” This quote explains to us that although The Road is a fictional novel, these are real life circumstances. He tells us that the world is slowly getting smaller, and everyone is oblivious to that fact.Cormac McCarthy’s beliefs demonstrate some of the people who are not naïve to the fact that not everything in the world is perfect, and there are struggles everywhere. In the movie/book The Hunger Games, the “contestants” have to fight until the death, leaving their family and everything they have ever known behind.
The movie presents a dystopian society because it is a lot like what is happening in the real world. People are fighting for food and dying if they can’t be nourished. The Hunger Games is a great representation for the lower class people, searching for the materials to live their daily lives, and to be able to survive. In an online article called The Hunger Games as Dystopian Fiction, it says “In this way, the goal of the dystopian genre to “place a mirror before readers, challenging them to examine the world they inhabit and the obstacles it places on the path to social justice” (Rodriguez 157). This quote shows us that even while making fictional films and books, the directors and producers are trying to mirror what it is like in the real world, if you set aside the curtain known as oblivion. It is important to look beyond what you know and use a holistic approach when determining whether the whole world is best described as a utopian and dystopian …show more content…
world. Some people may have trouble viewing our world as a dystopian society, because of all of the privileges and benefits here in the United States.
Noticed that the U.S. is the country mentioned and not the third world countries such as Cuba, North Korea, Laos, Syria, and so many more have their own individual problems. A website known as Quora shows us what problems people in third world countries face: one in four people have access to a computer and internet (Quora 1). This could tear our society apart, due to the fact that everything is done on a computer, including this essay. Another issue is the diseases presented in people around the country and maybe even the city or even the household. The lack of resources such as clean water and sanitary food leads to illnesses that can take lives instantly and cause distress on the
families. Religious freedom and freedom in general are very rare in third world countries. In the US, it is legal marry the same sex, it is legal to worship whichever God(s) you believe in, it’s essentially legal to do anything without infringing on another’s rights. That is very different than how people in third world countries have it. Most of the time, women are the typical caregivers, working in the kitchen and raising the kids. In many countries, the people are forced to believe in a single religion and the God of choice for that area. The freedoms of those less fortunate are taken by the government system or the religious leaders of that specific country. If people who believe that the world is a utopia looked at the world holistically and saw all of the problems occurring around the world, their opinion would most likely change. In addition,The world is describe as a dystopian world because people are constantly dying of preventable causes. For example, smoking, and drinking and driving are some leading causes of death according to CNN. Both of these can be prevented, which is very frustrating to people around the world, as they are dying from hunger and diseases. In conclusion, the world we live in today is filled with dystopian characteristics. The many choices we are given here in the United States, and never think about such as eating, sleeping, safety, shelter, freedom, are prime examples of a utopian society. But the assignment was not to characterize the US as dystopian or utopian, it was to characterize the world. For the reasons presented above, proves that the world we live in today is part of a dystopian society. Humanity as free individuals do not see the problems and struggles that other countries are having. Hunger, poverty, individual freedom are some of the differentiators from a utopian to a dystopian. The small things that are viewed as daily privileges could be the make or break deal for a person in a third world country. Those who are wealthy may not look at the whole idea of dystopian society. Although the US is a great place, and most U.S. citizens are thankful for everything they have here, there are other problems in the world that time and time again we are just looking over. These are some of the reasons in which the world we live in is a dystopian society.
