A beard, for example, can tell of us of one’s status. A beard in the 1800’s could have signified wisdom, power and authority. From a broader angle, throughout history, the beard exemplified one’s masculinity, power and authority.
Many people use the eagle to represent power, strength, pride, and authority. On the other hand, with a multitude biblical references, the eagle faced man could represent strength and prophecy. If we view the man as a man of power who maintained a position of authority before the Martians arrived, we might be able to understand his seemingly illogical reasons for gathering the money versus leaving it behind. However, if we view the eagle in a biblical sense in regards to prophecy, Wells might be foreshadowing later events.
With a running theme of power and authority, we can now make a few assumptions of the bearded, eagle faced man in regards to his actions. Wells is representing the money as society itself and the man as clutching to the remnants of society as it is deteriorating in a whirl of mass hysteria. By using the concept of money that everyone understands, we begin to notice the comparison of money to society. Likewise, if we think of money as more than a means of exchange for a good or service and more as a means of power and balance within a society, the comparison becomes
