Both the poem by David Shulman and the painting by Emanuel Leutze cover the same topic of Washington crossing the Delaware River; they are both different works, yet they have more similarities. The poem and the painting both include the weather and the surrounding terrain such as the rough water from the painting and the “stinging cold” from the poem. However, the poem offers more background to the actual event than the painting. An example is the mention of Washington being a general and the Hessian stronghold, something the viewer would not know about just from the painting.…
First off, WE'RE SCREWED. It was the last presidential election of our time. The candidates were terrible. It was either World War III(Hillary) or The Purge(Trump) and I guess America chose The Purge. So, I guess it's time to say goodbye to all people of mixed or other ethnicities, because Trump's gonna make us all go back. Time to say goodbye to those we befriended and growled to love. Goodbye to all the things that actually make this country GREAT. He says, "Let's Make America Great Again," but does he really mean it. America was created as a place where people all over the world can come and make something of themselves. Now it's a place where we look down on those who are different or those of us will different talents. We judge people…

We have now begun our journey to South Carolina. I can’t wait to arrive, though I am worried about the travel there. When we first set out, father spoke with James, Elizabeth, and I. He finally thought it was time to tell us about Lexington and Concord, I don’t think he knows I know so much about it already. Though he told us some things I was not aware of.…
Ellis Island, established in January 1st, 1892 opened as three large ships wait to land. 700 immigrants passed through Ellis Island that day, and nearly 450,000 followed over the course of that first year.…
The duality in this poem creates an illustration of the poet’s struggle which refers to the rising and falling of the African American culture; Johnson wonders how the world sees African American during this period as a people or things. It shows that the poet is worried about the direction the African American culture will be moving. Men or things is the comparison which is “Do they really think that African American people are worthless than white american people?” So the poet uses the word “thing” it mean that whites do not appreciate and insult African American people that they do not value as a human. It might be a question the the poet wants to ask others if it will take a long time to change their thinking or if it will take great efforts, strides, and sacrifices.…
What forces or ideas motivated and inspired this effort to remake and reform American society during the Antebellum years?…
One big continent, filled with a dark past of war, and also in some part forgiven and beauty resume in just one word America. People often refers to America as United States being all that America has to offer and we often forget that America is a lot more than that. But something is true United States resumes America to the core, here in the land of opportunity we can find everything, from the native Indians that one had ancestors that fight the colonist, to Argentinians, Cubans, Mexicans and everyone, from everywhere, and that is what make us exceptional. America is everything like Claude McKay said in his poem, even though sometimes living here can make us suffered, even though this country is not perfect we cannot help but love America. We represent everything that is good and bad, and we are always fitting to keep the balance, and yes sometimes we fail. Like McKay said her vigor and strange gave people hope, that one day all that is bad with going to go away. We are constantly fighting against our past trying to make things right, we want to be perfect and we don’t realize that we can’t be perfect, we can only try to have justice and freedom, to be different. We need the confront the future with the chin up and our eyes focused on goodness.…
The poem American Me, written by Ninfa Miranda-Maloney, tells the story of a Mexican immigrant who comes to the United States to live the American dream. The author incorporates ethnic aspects with her use of Spanish words sprinkled in amongst the poem. With his “spit shine shoes” (Miranda-Maloney, n.d, line 10) and “brillantina-slick back hair” (Miranda-Maloney, n.d., line 11), a picture is painted of a young man’s pride in himself as he begins the journey of a lifetime. This is a young man ready for his new life in America. The tone quickly changes, however, as he probably soon realizes that the dream is not what he had in mind. In San Eli, where he “lived on thank yous and maybes” (Miranda-Maloney, n.d., line 23), the reader gets the sense that the man was taken advantage of and worked hard for little compensation. The most powerful lines in the poem are “kissed your white land, broke my back, sweat a few tears for a piece of the dream” (Miranda-Maloney, n.d., lines 27, 28, 29). The author has incorporated a racial aspect in the poem by showing referring to the white land. This is not his land, this is the “white land”. He is doing back breaking labor for “whites”, probably not what he expected as the young man full of hope chasing the American dream. The author also includes social class aspects in this poem. The poem ends with the man, now here in the United States for fifty years, still smelling the onions on his fingertips. (Miranda-Maloney, n.d.) This leads me to believe the man is still working in the onion fields fifty years after arriving in the United States. A generalization can be made that a person from a lower social class would need to continue to work past retirement age to make ends meet.…
I was successful in creating two poems relating to Korean culture. My ideas were creative even though it was similar to the poem about French Revolution. I connected the Korean culture to a major historical event in Korea.…
The novel 'Americanah' ,written by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, is filled with lyricism and erudition. The book broadens a reader's mind to explore aspects of life in a completely different manner and widens the reader's point of view and understanding of why people do certain things.…

Native American written poetry has common qualities. A common recurring theme in their writing is nature. These people view nature as a beautiful thing even at the ugliest level there exists. They appreciate all forms of life and have a great deal of respect towards it as well. Native Americans respect nature because they view it as a spiritual thing. Somehow the animals have a certain innocence which the people cannot reach making the animals a sacred part of their everyday life. Friends reveal themselves as a common topic in this beautiful writing. Ancestors and friends are to teach each other what they know about life. They believe that life is a journey to reach a special place in the world and in the poems is how to reach that place. When on long journeys friends are kept close at heart and mind. However, they believe that they must not envy their friends and to be true to themselves. If the Native Americans live accordingly to their poems then it has been written that they can soar like an eagle and view the earth for what it is. Once you become an eagle you are one with the earth and are have reached a new level of spirituality. The poems shout that the earth can be viewed more widely when you become an eagle so that you understand more. Native American poetry portrays many of their views on life and we as a history class can learn much about how life would have been if we were living back in that distant time.…
He also speaks on how the people in positions of authority seem not to care about the everyday plight of the normal man. The leaders seem to ignore the daily struggles these people go through. There is a direct connection between the title of the song and the way the plight of the poverty stricken seems to be forgotten by the leaders.…
Renaissance is the result of the impact of British rule, their exploitation and expansion of empire. It is the awakening of national consciousness of people with new light and new thought. It is a kind of socio-cultural change which is the result of the union between two cultures – the east and the west. The light of Renaissance ignited nationalism and secular humanism in human minds, encouraged people to learn Western literature and philosophy for the rediscovery the world with new outlook, urged Indians to fight against all social diseases, inspired us to develop intellectual vision and to seek Truth, and above all, stirred up us to rediscover our cultural heritage, cultural treasures and to understand the glory of our ancient civilization. This reawakening for Renaissance spread the seeds of patriotism for national movement and prepared people for national interest. To create this national interest or to awake patriotism in national minds poets and writers had there significant role. Slowly they sow the seeds of patriotism in the young minds of India. In this paper I would like to throw some light on some of the Henry Derozio’s poems in English where we feel the spirits of patriotism.…
