For this assignment I choose to focus on the Early Childhood stage of human development. My observation began just before Thanksgiving break at the child care center I work at in Park Forest, IL. I choose a female student enrolled in our Kindergarten program, age five named Trinity. Throughout the observation, I focused on the following three main characteristics: empathy development, advances in peer sociability and early childhood literacy. I began my observation of Trinity on Monday November 16, 2009. Due to the fact that I work at the center she attends, I was able to observe her multiple times participating in a variety of activities on a daily basis. During my initial observation, I found Trinity to be a seemingly happy child, somewhat shy but very independent. In the classroom, she had another female friend that she played with most of the time. They usually played in the dramatic play area, in which Trinity usually pretended to be some type of mother role. She very actively gave instructions on how to play house and seemed to be the leader of the group. On one occasion, I observed Trinity become upset with another male student for taking an apron from another student (her close friend) in an attempt to play with them. I also observed Trinity helping another child tie their shoes and becoming frustrated with them for not being able to complete the bow and tying it herself. I do feel she has more responsibilities than an average five year old however, a lighter load might allow her to experience her childhood in a more positive way. In regard to her development of empathy, I feel as though she has already started the process of forming the correlation between understanding another person’s feelings and responding appropriately. In some instances I believe she could be perceived as overly empathizing with others and putting their feelings and needs before her own, which is not really typical of a five year
