Early Childhood Professionalism Essay

Competency Statement VI
To Maintain a Commitment to Professionalism

How my professional practices meet this standard:

To maintain professionalism, I focus on what I want to become: An Intentional Teacher. To be an intentional teacher, one must protect the confidentiality of his or her students and the program they are attending. It is important for an intentional teacher to present her/himself in a professional manner at all times. That includes being to work on time every day, dressing conservatively, possessing a positive attitude and work ethic and use good judgment when making decisions that pertain to the children in her/his care. One must be an advocate for the children in her/his care and their families. One must keep themselves updated on child care practices, research and other developments in the profession. Being an intentional teacher means you are a lifelong learner and anyone in the early childhood education field should continue their education and be informed on the latest practices.

I have chosen to go into this field because I want to help get children ready for an important part of their lives. Watching my son grow and having the privilege of being able to see how his young mind is starting to put pieces together has made me want to be a part of that for all young

The lecture last week gave me a clearer understanding as to why parents might deny services that could help their children with disabilities. Instead of just focusing on the emotional aspect of it, I was able to see the logical side of such a tremendous decision. Concerning the emotional side, I would initially be very upset, confused and even a bit angry. But since I am an ECI professional, I would set aside my own personal judgments and look for ways to help the family out any way I can. I would think of possible reasons why they have denied the services. Understanding a situation best I can, will help me figure out compromises and solutions. Maybe there are money problems, time constraints, or underestimating the issue, for example.…
