The Spanish and English colonies both moved to North America for opportuity. The difference is that the Spaniards wanted gold, and the English colonists wanted freedom. The Spanish settled in the Southwest and the English colonies went to New England.
The Spaniards ventured to the United States region of America from Latin America. They wanted to find the same kind of success they had found in South and Central America. But, they ran into some problems – the largest being that there was hardly any gold. The Spaniards needed gold for income and that was the reason they were in the Southwest. They were after gold and changing Native Americans to being catholic, and they were there to do their jobs, get rich with gold, and go home.
Many of the English colonists came to America for religious freedom, and a new chance for a better life. They brought over their families and created permanent settlements with schools and churches and new generations. The English colonies had established a form of self-government and later had the early beginnings of a democracy with assemblies and several elected officials like governors.
Even though the French and English has some of the same goals in the "new" world, there were differences in the way they did things. England wanted their colonists to make England's economy strong with manufactured goods. The colonists did this with agricultural settlements. The French, only cared about controlling trade routes, with lots of furs.
