Earthworm Lab Report
Introduction: There are times when it is necessary to go through something both inside and outside, literally, to learn. This was exactly the case with virtual lab #11 where the experiment called for an examination of an earthworm’s exterior anatomy and interior anatomy. The earthworm as a whole is considered the dependent variable as we cannot change it. However, the labels to be placed can be moved so they are the independent variables. My hypothesis is quite elementary. I believe that after studying the anatomy of an earthworm I will be better educated about it.

Procedure:

    The circulatory system is important in circulating blood, nutrients, oxygen and chemicals to the body. A circulatory system commonly consists of the fluid it contains, such as blood, a pumping vessel such as a heart, and the vessels, which carry the fluid through the body. In a closed circulatory system, the fluid, blood, is contained within the vessels as it circulates through the body. The Lumbriculus variegates, or blackworm, is commonly found in stagnant water along the edges of marshes and ponds. Blackworms have a closed circulatory system, which in the blackworm includes a large dorsal blood vessel [1]. Glucose is the most common carbohydrate and is classified as a monosaccharide and is a reducing sugar. Glucose is called blood sugar as well because it circulates in the blood. When blood glucose is high, the pancreas releases insulin, which then helps to transport glucose into muscle or liver cells. There, it's used for energy. If there's more glucose present than needed, insulin helps the glucose to be stored in adipose tissues as fat for potential future energy needs. One immediate effect of the breakdown and conversion of glucose into cellular energy is an increased metabolism, which can manifest itself in the form of increased heart rate, high blood pressure or some other form of arousal such as heightened mental alertness [4].…

    Termites produce special chemicals within their bodies called pheromones. Because termites are usually found inside dark areas, pheromones help them communicate in these places. Past studies have suggested that ink inside ballpoint pens contains pheromones, causing termites to follow any trail created by the ink. If a pathway is drawn with an ink pen, then a termite will be attracted to the path and trace it due to the pheromones. To test the behavior of termites in relation with the presence of ink, we outlined two shapes with two different writing utensils and timed how long out of a sixty second time period that the termite spent on each path. The results showed that termites spend a substantially longer amount of time following the path of an ink pen than paths made from other writing utensils. The tested termites spent an average amount of 26.9 out of 60 seconds on paths made by the ink pen, but an average of only 2.4 of 60 seconds on a path made by a Sharpie marker. The p-value for the data is 0.00309 for the pen and 0.000214 for the Sharpie marker. The results suggest that termites are attracted to the pheromones contained in ink. This contributes to understanding how termites communicate and travel in areas without light.…

    This report discusses an experiment to study the rate of aerobic cellular respiration in aquatic organisms which are Elodea (aquatic plant), Snail, and Goldfish, by measuring carbon dioxide production.
