Easy A
In the movie, Easy A, Olive ‘s entire life takes a turn for the worst based off a little white lie. When rumors get around that she’s sleeping with everyone, she keeps them going and starts accepting profit for the lies. After portraying the image of a whore, Olive gets fed up with all the gossip and tells everyone the truth. In the midst of it all, Olive compares herself to Hester Prynne. Easy A is an update of the Scarlet Letter with a John Hughes twist.
Easy A is an update of the novel The Scarlet Letter. For example, In the Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynne commits adultery and gets shamed for it. In Easy A, Olive is shamed by pretending to have sex with many guys. Easy A consists of the modern day world in which the story The Scarlet Letter would be told. In the movie, Olive portrays herself to be dating an older guy in community college in order to get out of going on a camping trip with her best friend . She is then forced under pressure to tell an even bigger lie in which she lost her virginity to this college kid. When word gets around she confides in her gay friend brandon and confesses her lie and desperate need to fit in. Brandon then realizes that he also needs to find a way to fit in in order to survive high school and Olive would be the only solution to his problem. They both come up with a devious plan to have sex at a party so that everyone would believe Brandon isn’t gay.
Once word gets out this story is an example of how one lie could be spread by word of mouth, and completely ruin someone’s reputation. In the The Scarlet Letter, Hester didn't care much about of popularity, or how her status in her town. This shows how Easy A is an update. In this generation, we care much about how others perceive us, and about wanting to fit in. Hester didn't care about fitting in. Also, In Easy A, it shows how they incorporated modern things into the whole Scarlet Letter story. For example, in the movie, Olive mentions modern movies and novels. She mentions Sister of the Traveling Pants and Grease. Olive also gets her whole story across from a podcast. This shows how the world has changed, and instead of confessing in front of everyone on the stage, she does it on the internet. The way the two characters resolve their problems is different as well. Olive completely ignores the rumors in the end and finally proves that they are false. Hester admits the crime that she performed, but she works to pay those crimes off. This difference also results from the society that they live in. With different expectation comes different actions. The example of Hester and Olive prove this to be correct. Easy A is also a twist from all the John Hughes movies. In fact, a couple of Hughes biggest movies were mentioned, and scenes were acted out. For example, many times throughout the whole movie, Olive consistently mentions, Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, and The Breakfast Club. Also, there was a couple scenes that were just like Hughes movies. For Instance, Todd holding the speakers outside of Olive's window was a Pretty in Pink reference. The two of them riding on the back of the mower was also relating to Can't Buy me Love. I think they put the John Hughes movie twist in it because all of John Hughes movies are all love movies, with a happy ending.
In conclusion, high school can be a very challenging obstacle in life as referred to in all of the movies. Life can take a turn for the worse, based off of a little white lie but in the end the truth will set you free. Throughout both the movie and the novel, Olive & Hester go through the same stream of events but in two completely different centuries. They are faced with life changing obstacles and life lessons that force them to change their outlook on life. Hester knows she has made a mistake and tries to change the way people view her by helping others. Olive didn’t make any mistakes she just ruined her reputation by trying to help others. Both women did something so simple to ruin their reputations and then had to pay the price. They managed to turn everything around with their hardwork and dedication.

When The Scarlet Letter was written the Author, Nathaniel Hawthorne, discovered many ideas and facts about the Puritan community. Knowing this Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote about how women in the 17th century lived and how strict the society's rules can be, one major rule that was followed strictly phonate was “Actions spoke louder than words, so actions had to be constantly controlled.” (nd.edu). When the book begins it starts with introducing Hester and how she has done this huge violation according to the bible, maybe even causing the death penalty upon herself. As The Scarlet Letter goes through the timeline of how she is isolated and is shunned from the society; eventually, Hester slowly becomes part of the society by being the pure character she really was. This lets her take off the scarlet “A” and change the meaning of Adultery to the meaning of Able. Hawthorne decribes the climax of Hester’s story by expressing, “The letter was the symbol of her calling. such helpfulness…

In the beginning of the novel, Hester’s community, specifically the goodwives, discuss how they are angry with Hester’s punishment because they think it is not severe enough. One of the goodwives says, “I’ll tell ye a piece of my mind. It would be greatly for the public behoof, if we women, being of mature age and church-members in good repute, should have the handling of such malefactresses as this Hester Prynne. What think ye, gossips? If the hussy stood up for judgment before us five, that are now here in a knot together, would she come off with such a sentence as the worshipful magistrates have awarded? Marry, I trow not!” (46) This quote shows the community’s resentment of Hester near the beginning of the novel. However, later in the book, it is revealed that as the years have gone by, Hester gained much respect and love through the community because of her hard work and her charity services. Her symbol, the scarlet letter, has also changed in meaning over time. Now, it is not a symbol of sin and isolation, but instead a symbol of Hester’s strength and kindness. Hawthorne says, “Such helpfulness was found in her,--so much power to do, and power to sympathize,--that many people refused to interpret the scarlet A by its original signification. They say that it meant Able; so strong was Hester Prynne, with a…

Despite Hester’s sin, she had become known for ability to help others and her strength; the A now represents Able, not Adulteress. This illustrates the fact that Hawthorne believes that truth and embracing sin leads to freedom and forgiveness. Hester has an overall impact in her community despite of the symbol of shame that the letter is meant to represent, by regaining her communities admiration through her ability to be a productive member of the community and sympathize with others. Hester utilizes her “shame” to derive strength, pushing the notion of righteousness through the embracement of sin. Hester continues to participate in society, creating items such as gloves for religious activities, and through this, Hester regains the trust of the people. Hester’s morals of truth, honesty, and hard work are further justified as the righteous morals when it becomes apparent to the community that “none so ready as she to give her little substance to every demand of poverty” (110).…

Every hero has to have their brutal beginnings before they blossom into their true hero status. For Hester Prynne, this was the constant critism and negative views the Puritan community held for Hester because of her commiting the crime of adultery, ultimately leading her to evolve into a stronger person. The townspeople feel like Hester’s sin deserves "At the very least…a hot iron on [her] forehead,” or even death. (Hawthorne, 53) Hester’s heroic charcteristics are first seen when she comes out of the prison. Every one expects Hester to be “dimmed and obscured by a disastrous cloud,” when she walks out , but instead she emerges with “a haughty smile, and a glance that would not be abashed,” (55). Despite the harsh critisicm of the Puritan society, Hester does not allow herself to be influenced and show shame for her acts, like the community thinks she should. The critiscms of the town do not weaken Hester as a person, rather strengthen her to stand strong and accept her punishment with grace instead of shame. Hester also grew through the wearing of the letter “A” on her bosom. The letter was put on the bosom of Hester to inform the whole community of Hester’s sin. However, Hester embroidered the “A” “so fantastically…It had the effect of a spell, taking her out of the ordinary relations with humanity, and enclosing her in a sphere by herself,” (56). By making the letter look beautiful rather than shameful, like the towns intentions, Hester proves…
