The humble beginnings of EasyJet started in 1995, when Sir Stelios Haji-loannou founded the company, with the purpose of offering low cost flights across Europe. October of that year saw the first base being opened at Luton Airport, with the first flight taking off on November 10th to Glasgow. The following year in 1996 saw Easyjet conduct its very first international flight, initially starting with flights to Amsterdam, shortly being followed by Nice and Barcelona. 1996 also brought the first low fare flight promotion, receiving outstanding success with over a million calls in just 4 days. This is where the foundation for Easyjet and Easyjet shares were laid, with the company only growing from then.
In 1997 the brand joined the digital evolution as the EasyJet website was launched with online bookings being integrated the year thereafter. October that year saw EasyJet become recognised as a financially viable airline, receiving their own Air Operating Certificate, allowing them to open up a second base at Liverpool Airport. 2001 and 2002 brought more bases, welcoming the addition of London Gatwick, London Stansted, East Midlands Airport, and Bristol Airport into the fold, while the EasyJet website beame the second largest travel website in the UK, with the company topping customer satisfaction surveys. Through 2004 to 2006 there were several significant changes, largely due to the demand of those who held Easyjet shares at the time. This changes included the introduction of self-check in kiosks, and further expansion of flights into Europe due to the increased size of the European Union. Further flight paths were added, like Istanbul, Rijeka, Hungary, Slovenia, while removing weight restrictions for hand luggage and introducing speedy boarding for customers was also looked on
