According to “Should We Ban Competitive Eating?” by Sarah McCarry’’ and “Step Away From the Hot dog: Should competitive eating be banned?” by Dakshana Bascaramurty, competitive eating should be banned. It’s wasteful, can cause death, and has high risks for serious health problems. First of all, “805 million people go hungry every day, downing ridiculous quantities of food for entertainment seems not just wasteful, but calloug” (McCarry 17). This explains that it is pointless to waste food on some competition that doesn’t promote anything positive. People everyday are starving and we’re sitting on our couches watching people scarf down food that those people could be eating. Secondly, “In 2004, a Japanese woman choked to death
during a rice cake eating competition” (McCarry 16). Why would anyone even bother with this sport if it has high death possibility? People are pretty eating large amounts of death as they eat in the competitions. The body is not made to handle very very large quantities of food.
One could argue that you can make a lot of money from competitive eating, but money doesn’t compare to the high health risks competitive eating has. “Usually associated with diabetes, gastroparesis can cause chronic indigestion, nausea, and vomiting” (Sine 2). These health risks aren’t worth the money. “Protracted vomiting can increase the chances of food getting into the lungs rather than the esophagus” (Sine 2). If you do end up with a severe health problem and in the hospital, all the money you earn will have to go towards the hospital bill. Then it wouldn’t matter, so don’t even bother risking it.
It may seem unnecessary, but competitive eating has to put to an end. People are literally dying and risking their lives for some competition that doesn't support anything positive. Competitive eating must must stop before more people get sick and/ or die.
