In the following report, I plan on investigating and comparing the eBusiness strategies of two businesses: Netflix and CeX.
Netflix is an international provider of on-demand Internet streaming media. For a monthly fee of it allows users to watch movies and TV shows unlimited, in high definition. It has no brick and mortar presence. At the moment, Netflix is available in over 60 countries in North and South America, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and parts of Europe. Company was established in 1997 in the USA as a single-rental subscription-based scheme. It gives users extensive information on how to keep their accounts and computers secure, and asks for reports on any suspicious activity. It also launched its own open source security system called FIDO (Fully Integrated Defence Operation), software automatically analysing events and responding to security incidents. The website offers a user an option called “sign out of all devices” and lets user view all of his/hers activity in the service, including date and time of videos watched. To create an account a client need to have a valid credit/debit card.
CeX accepts Credit / Debit Cards, PayPal and CeX Voucher payments. To sign up as a CeX member and be able to sell to them items, a person must an ID and be overage. There is no special security features, payments are secured either by credit/debit card operator or by PayPal. Once a user logged in, most of their screen is covered with video propositions sorted info categories such as “comedies”, “tv shows” etc. User can rate videos giving them “stars” – up to 5. Every video has a description, with short plot summery, list of actors, year of production and age rating. “Star” rating system lets the website make suggestions for users, basing them on user’s preferences. One account can have up to five profiles, allowing each family members to personalise their profile and get individual film suggestions. There is also a parental control system for parents. User has to be logged on the website to see any of its content, and although there is a month-long free trial period, to be able to access it a user has to submit his/hers card details, which can be discouraging for some potential
