I. Introduction
- Content management is a horizontal set of technologies that supports operational business processes and, consequently, is applicable to organizations of all types and sizes, and in all geographies. But as Ovum’s analysis illustrates, at the enterprise level (organizations of 1,000-plus employees), and on a global scale, there are now a relatively few vendors with consolidated platforms that can address the broad range of organizational content management needs.
- The ECM market is currently dominated by EMC, IBM, and OpenText, with Oracle and, latterly Autonomy, posing significant challenges. Meanwhile Microsoft, with its brand awareness of SharePoint, and Alfresco, with its open source message, also provides viable alternatives to the “big boys.” ECM deployments are certainly not cheap. This is not because of the software license cost – it is for other reasons that Alfresco or Microsoft solutions will be deployed.
II. Market and Solution Analysis
1. ECM Vendors in the Market
- Content management technologies are relatively mature from an IT software perspective, and differentiation between the major providers of ECM platforms is consequently limited. - The Decision Matrix bubble chart, based upon the three parameters of Technology (measured on the X axis), Customer Satisfaction (measured on the Y axis) and Market Impact (illustrated by bubble size) confirms that technology-wise, there is little difference in capabilities between the leaders and challengers.
- As expected, the larger vendors have both the greatest recognition and customer satisfaction. Given that Alfresco solely offers a content management product, it is not surprising that the vendor is ahead of Microsoft technology-wise, and while revenue-wise it is not significant at present, Alfresco’s market presence in business and its extensive partner
