Ecocritcism In The Silent Spring By Rachel Carson

Ecocritcism. The word that makes you say, “what does that mean?” It’s actually a way that authors inform us of the environment and what is happening to it and can be found in many books around the world. A classic book that a person can find this is The Lorax by Doctor Seuss. In the book we have The Lorax, a strange creature who speaks for the trees, trying to stop a man, that goes by the name of The Once-ler, from destroying a forest of truffle trees to make a profit by selling Thneeds. The Once-ler ignores The Lorax and claims that, “Thneeds are what everybody needs,” (Dr. Seuss, 1971) and he will keep doing as he pleases. One by one the animals of the forest leaves; starting with the brown bar-ba-loots in their bar-ba-loot suits, then the swammy-swans, and finally the humming fish of the nearby water in search of cleaner water. The Ecocritcism is that Doctor Seuss is providing an example of what would happen if we don’t change as well as entertain his audience with phrases that rhyme.
It is kind of like a bibliography and tells about the experiences of Carson during this time as well as her pushing the fight against chemicals. She provides many facts such as “These sprays, dusts, and aerosols are now applied almost universally to farms, gardens, forests, and homes nonselective chemicals that have the power to kill every insect, the "good" and the "bad," to still the song of birds and the leaping of fish in the streams, to coat the leaves with a deadly film, and to linger on in soil all this though the intended target may be only a few weeds or insects.” (Carson, 1962) She provided an example of a town in an attempt to persuade us to change our ways of using chemicals to kill everything that displeases
