Foreword

Foreign Trade Statistics (FTS), one of the core publications of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), is being published annually since 1973-74. It is The 23rd issue which contains information about exports and imports of 2008-09. It should be mentionable here that it presents disaggregated data to the possible extent on foreign trade following Harmonised Commodity Description and Coding System (HS code). The data furnished in this report have been collected from National Board of Revenue (NBR). Although BBS used to collect some export and import documents from various customs stations to ensure complete coverage of foreign trade but for the present issue, the only data source is NBR which brings all the data generated in various customs stations under their documentation. This edition has got two parts: Volume-I having five tables with export data and Volume-II containing four tables with import data. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to the Director General and his fellow colleagues of BBS for bringing out this report. I also appreciate the relentless efforts of the concerned officers and staff of Foreign Trade Section of National Accounting Wing, BBS for collection and compilation of the data provided in this report. Any comments and suggestions from the users and other stakeholders for further improvement of the publication would be highly appreciated.

White appliance is a foreign company and it’s trying to get in Bangladeshi market. In Bangladesh the average monthly income is about 500 dollar a month which is 35000 in Taka. So the income scale is medium. According to our survey we figured out that microwave oven is used by the people whose income scale is about 70000-80000 or higher in the month. If we consider the social class, we found the people from the higher and higher middle class are using the microwave oven and the rest of the people are comfortable with the gas stove. In Bangladesh, the market of microwave oven is not that good enough. Our company cannot sustain in this limited amount of market. The company actually wants a huge market to do business. In this case, we got only one option and that s to expand the usage of microwave oven in the country and to do so we need to target a new segment. We can’t just work on only two classes. Rather we need to concentrate on the middle class and upcoming middle class people.…

The first important observation is that SAARC plays a very marginal role in Bangladesh’s exports. The share of Bangladesh’s exports to SAARC amounts to less than 4 percent of Bangladesh exports to the rest of the world. The shares are slightly more significant for imports, amounting to just below 12 percent for fiscal year 2007/08, but are still not as high as one might have expected. Second, the shares of imports and exports have grown only marginally over the ten year period: a) for exports from 2.4 percent to 3.3 percent, b) for imports from 13.8 percent to 18.1 percent, and c) for the sum of exports and imports from 9.1 percent to 11.6 percent.…

In International trade payments, the most important participants are exporters and importers. Here exporters are sellers and importers are buyers. Importers and exporters are quite often confront with problems arising from the movements of goods from one country to another and are simultaneously subject to the different legislation, customs and practices of these countries. Importers and exporters have certain concerns such as: Exporters want to be certain that they are paid when their goods have been shipped or dispatched because the goods will be out of their control on the other side Importers want to be certain that they receive goods that conform to what has been ordered. There are a number of methods of trade payment. Before importers and exporters decide to do business with each other they need to understand and adopt a method suitable to meet their specific needs. The contract between buyer and seller will specify the way in which payment is to be made. Certain methods of payment are less risky than others. It is up to the buyer and seller to agree on a method that suits them both. The choice of payment method is affected by several factors like requirements of the seller and buyer, relationships between the trading partners, the operating environment and associated risks, object of transaction and market conditions etc. Once acceptable risks have been determined then the most appropriate payment method can be selected.…

The TBT exists to ensure that technical regulations, standards, testing, and certification procedures do not create unnecessary obstacles to trade. The agreement prohibits technical requirements created in order to limit trade, as opposed to technical requirements created for legitimate purposes such as consumer or environmental protection. The WTO Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) seeks to protect the interests of: (i) Importers by allowing them to protect human, plant and animal health and life; consumers; environment; national security; and other policy interests by imposing technical regulations and standards on their imports. (ii) Exporters by assuring them that these standards, regulations and conformity assessment procedures do not impede trade. Now in Bangladesh, 2 million garment workers are working in the RMG units, of whom 80 per cent are women. RMG roughly covers 76 per cent of the total export of the country and is the highest earning industry in the economy. 2 million workers in 4,000 factories, which is about one-fourth of the number of employees engaged in the manufacturing sector, constitute the real backbone of the country's economy. Study shows that the RMG sector and related upstream and downstream activities are estimated to contribute an income of about $ 5.0 billion which is equivalent to about 9 per cent of Bangladesh's current GDP. Comparatively, over the same period Bangladesh's ne disbursement of aid was to the tune of only about $ 800 million. Thus, RMG sector's contribution to Bangladesh's balance of payments and foreign exchange reserves also cannot be understated. TBT is an agreement under WTO which is closely related to RMG sectors. As RMG contributes mostly to the country’s economy, any kind of nontariff barrier may affect it’s contribution if it is imposed by the deceptive way. So, TBT is good but sometimes it creates problem to the importing nation who imports products.…
