I was interested in a job within the design office environment but was advised to first gain practical experience in the workshops. I started a 4 year apprentice trade as a boilermaker. During the first 6 months of training I was exposed to various type of work within the boilermaker industry. Typical examples of experience gained in a manufacturers workshop are: Fabrication of underground man carriages Fabrication Silo Feed Conveyors and trestles Fabrication of various tanks and vessels On site fabrication of piping for various pump stations around the slimes dams I resigned from the company when I was called up to complete the compulsory 2 year National Service.
