The first standard I demonstrated was standard one. Standard one is supporting instructional opportunities. I organized and prepared materials to support learning and the teaching process. The first graders have been learning about Pilgrims. Mrs. Levan wanted her class to create their own Pilgrim. The students painted a circle plate, the color of their skin, for the head of their Pilgrim. Once the students had their circles painted, then they drew a face and their hair. Mrs. Levan explained to the girls to draw their hair short because Pilgrim girls wore their hair up. In order to create the Pilgrim hats, Mrs. Levan had me cut different colored construction paper into various sizes. I cut the yellow paper into the size …show more content…
of a belt buckle. The black and brown paper were cut into rectangles for the Pilgrim hats. After I cut all the construction paper, Mrs. Levan showed the students how to create their Pilgrims while I passed out the materials on their desk. The girls used a paper plate to make a collar and a hat. The boys used a paper plate for their collar and then used the construction paper for their hats. Mrs. Levan and I walked around to assist the students in creating their Pilgrims. Some of the students were able to follow directions, while others had a hard time knowing what to do next. Once the students were done with their Pilgrims, they put them on the back table to dry. Mrs. Levan hung them up on the bulletin board outside of the classroom. Another standard I demonstrated was standard two.
Standard two is demonstrating professionalism and ethical practice. I carried out the responsibilities of a paraprofessional. During Mrs. Nappier’s first grade SIT group, one of the students had a melt down. One of the other students told her that she was taking forever while she was reading. This upset the student and she started crying. Mrs. Nappier talked to the student about how it is not nice to say things like that when someone is trying to read. While Mrs. Nappier was walking the girl back to her classroom, the third grade group came in. At first, I was unsure what to do. I have never worked with the third grade reading SIT group before. I am usually heading to help Mrs. Meyer as the third graders are coming into Mrs. Nappier’s room. I went over to the bookshelf and grabbed their basket. Once I figured out each of the student’s names, I passed out each one of their folders to them. I was able to get them started on their lesson while Mrs. Nappier was handling the situation. I let two of the students finish up their crossword puzzle. The other student went back and reread the story for today. When Mrs. Nappier walked back in the room, she was impressed on how well the students were working. She thanked me for getting the students started on the
lesson.
