Edgar Sawtelle Essay
Through the whole story Edgar has been alone trying to find out how his father died. If he just let someone know or asked for help he wouldn’t have to deal with this problem alone. He’s been walking around with this guilt and anger inside him. If he told his mother about his concerns, she would want to help find out also.
Correspondingly Edgar had his feelings and emotions bottled in. “Things would be changing right now if your father were alive, Edgar. That's just life. You can fight it or you accept it.” He was angry with himself, his mother, and most of all Claude. He blamed himself for his father’s death. “Edgar, there's a difference between missing him and wanting nothing to change." And because of these events his relationship with his mother has diminished. And having Claude and Trudy’s intimate relationship doesn’t make it better. If Edgar told Trudy of his suspicions, she would want to help with the problem.
If Edgar told Trudy, her trust with Claude would wither away. The house would be edgy; Trudy wouldn’t want to do anything with Claude. She wouldn’t want to sleep with him anymore. Their relationship would be a mess. She would want to help Edgar. Resulting in Claude being kicked out or going back to jail. Edgar and Trudy’s relationship would strengthen and recover. "A person communicates by giving as well as taking, by expressing what is inside"
Conversely, If Edgar did tell his mother the story would be much different. He wouldn’t have to run away from everything. Dr. Papineau would be alive and breathing. Edgar wouldn’t have to try to survive in the woods and steal food from cabins. Trudy wouldn’t trust Claude and their relationship would be over. If Edgar did say something, Trudy wouldn’t have to deal with losing her only child.

For example, when Adelaine and her cousin Ronny throw a party using the money that Uncle Josh gave to Adelaine to buy her silence about the abuse, Adelaine wants to tell Ronny about where the money came from but decides not to. Just before Adelaine is about to tell Ronny about the money, she decides that “[she does not] want to tell her after all . . . [because] She had a big mouth, and anything [she] told her [she] might as well stand on a street corner and shout to the world” (293). Even though Adelaine and Ronny are family and have been friends since childhood, Adelaine does not trust Ronny enough to keep her secret about the sexual abuse. Likewise, Adelaine also does not trust her boyfriend Jimmy with her secret. For example, when Jimmy enters Adelaine’s house, he realizes what has been happening between her and her uncle Josh. When Adelaine is about to come down the stairs to see Jimmy, she sees him “sitting at the kitchen table with the present that [she had] meant for Uncle Josh, looking at the note. Without seeing [her], he [closes] the box, neatly [folds] the note, and [walks] out the door” (305). Adelaine never considers telling Jimmy her secret before he finds the gift she has left for Uncle Josh because she cannot bring herself to trust others. The sexual abuse Adelaine experiences in her childhood lead her to not trust others, including those closest to her such as Ronny and Jimmy. As Robinson shows through writing “Queen of the North” in a non-linear way, Adelaine remembers incidences of sexual abuse from her past that are a constant reminder of the disruption of her childhood and of the trust her put in Uncle Josh and he broke. Uncle Josh breaking Adelaine’s trust when she was a child has led her to become less trusting in the present, especially when it comes to her sexual…

2.Vahan couldn't discuss his fear with his mother because first of all, he was too scared to say a word and he wasn't confident enough to say anything. Also he was imagining things in his mind of what might have happened to his father and maybe if he told his mother, he would burst out in tears. He didn't also want to disturb his mother because his mother was very depressed when her husband left and it seemed like her heart wasn't there. Also, her mother would have lied to him anyway and not tell him the truth for why the Turks took his father.…

Poe’s early life was difficult, his father left shortly after he was born, and his mother died when he was just three1. Being so young without parents, Edgar Poe was adopted by the Allan family, taking their last name as his middle name. As Poe grew up he bonded with Mrs. Allan but never agreed with Mr. John Allan1. This perpetual disagreement led to money troubles for Poe when he wanted to go to college, John Allen would not lend him enough money to complete his studies at the University of Virginia.…

In the movie it was clear that Antoine’s mother did not give him the love and nurturing he needed for proper and healthy development and growth. One of the first times she appears in this film is when she comes home and does not show any concern for Antoine, instead vainly checks herself out in the mirror. She is very short tempered with Antoine in a majority of the film, except when she was being extra nice so Antoine would not tell his father he saw her kissing another man. His mom’s infidelity was likely a key factor in Antoine’s rebellion. Just imagine being a young boy and coming to find your mother cheating on your father, and then having to keep it secret. Also he sees his mother lying to his father by not telling him about it, which may have made Antoine more comfortable with lying. In Ebert’s review he says that there were also many happy moments throughout the movie such as, when they all went to the movie, but even that scene seemed fake. It appeared the mother was trying to keep Antoine quite through bribery about the affair. Another point on bad parenting occurred when his dad found out that Antoine lied about skipping school, his dad came into…

In the drama of Hamlet and the novel The Story of Edgar Sawtelle there are many similarities. One of the most interesting similarities being, the relationship between Hamlet and Horatio, and Edgar and Almondine. They both reflect on the loyalty, protection and support shown in each writing. In Shakespeare’s drama Hamlet, Horatio and Hamlet have been best friends since there childhood years and have been ever since. In Wroblewski’s novel, The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, Edgar and Almondine have been inseparable since the birth of Edgar, with the locality of Edgar being born mute. All of which are displayed in the novel The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, and the drama Hamlet.…

A happy farm life, tragic heart break, traitorous family, and of course dogs: the marvelous components that make The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski a true classic. Within this brilliant novel there are of course many memorable moments that leave the reader filled with shock, sympathy and deep sadness. The most intense moment in the novel to me, though, was the death of Edgar’s father, Gar. The strong relationship between father and son as well as Edgar’s muteness makes this moment a pivotal point in the novel, and the sympathy felt by the reader brands this part of the novel as the most memorable and influential moment in the book.…

It kind of reminds us that everything doesn’t need to be in disarray all the time. He also serves as a ‘snapshot’ of the time period, accurately depicting upper class life hundreds of years ago. To address the second question (of the small prompt, #3): if a finger must be pointed to the impetus of Edgar’s “change” in character, I will accuse Heathcliff! Around Catherine, this always makes him slightly cautious. A description I really like of Edgar when concerned about Catherine: “… the stab of a knife could not inflict a worse pang than he suffered at seeing his lady vexed.” (33%, apparently page 148 in Kindle land). Edgar clearly is pretty obsessed with his ‘lady’ and we can understand that he may act a bit out of character when Heathcliff tries anything…
