Underage Drinking and Driving
Underage drinking and driving is a serious problem in our society today, and occurs all too often. There many dangers and problems that occur with underage drinking and driving that can affect everyone not just the drunk driver. Not only can the drunk driver injure or kill themselves, but they put the lives of other people in danger as well. Underage drinking and driving can ruin a young adults promising future as well as the future of others. There are serious legal ramifications for underage drinking and driving that could land an offender in jail, leave them with fines to pay, and many other penalties. With all of these dangers linked to underage drinking and driving it makes you wonder why anyone would want to attempt to drink and drive.
Consumption of alcohol in the United States for any individual under the age of twenty-one is illegal. Even though it is illegal for teenagers to consume alcohol this does not stop teenagers all across the United States from drinking. Even worse is that some of the teenagers will drink alcohol and then will attempt to drive. Driving under the influence of alcohol is dangerous for any one to attempt, and is even more dangerous for teenage drivers. Driving under the influence of alcohol greatly increases the chance of a person being in an accident, and this attempt can be fatal to the driver, passengers, other drivers, and innocent civilians. If someone you know who does get drunk have them call someone they can trust to come get them, or take them yourself only if you have not been drinking. The same goes for any teenager who decides to get drunk they should call their parents or someone they trust to come get them instead of attempting to drive. Maybe because a teenager called their parents instead of attempting to drive they will get in trouble, but this could safe their life or a friend's life.
All to often do you hear about car accidents that happened due to an individual drinking alcohol.

Driving under the influence has been this country’s most frequent committed crime as there were few laws and weren’t as strict. The problems that lead to the creation of MADD were the many alcohol related accidents that have occurred with minimum punishment. In 1980, 27,000 alcohol-related traffic fatalities occurred in the United States each year, including 2,500 in California alone. The blood alcohol level in the United States was .15 in 1938 but then .10 in the 80’s before MADD and other advocate groups pressured it to be lowered to now .08 in the year 2005. Another issue was that many underage people were drinking alcohol. The drinking age depending on the state was 18 years old but has not been raised to 21 in the…

Although the number of deaths caused by drunk driving has shown a slight decrease over the past few years, alcohol still plays a major role in motor vehicle accidents. According to Transport Canada ‘Alcohol use by drivers was a factor in almost 30 percent of deaths from vehicle crashes during 2003-2005’. That may seem like a lot but it is actually a 10 percent decrease from the number of alcohol related fatalities between 1996-2001.…

Some would argue that the drinking age shouldn 't be lowered because of three very real risks, drunk driving, alcohol poisoning, and violent or destructive behavior. Drunk driving is a stain on our civilization. An average of 17,000 individuals die each year in drunk driving related deaths. It seems quite plausible that were alcohol to be legalized for those under the age of 18, the 15.1% of 18 to 20 year olds who drink before getting behind the wheel would rise significantly. A brief stroll through nearly every campus in America reveals keg parties, crowded bars filled with fake ID minors, and rowdy sorority and fraternity functions. When you consider that adolescence is a time of great impulsivity and tendency for violence and destructive behavior, the dangers of legalizing alcohol for minors become that much more real.…

If the drinking age was changed from 21 to 18 the number of arrests would skyrocket. “In 2011, at least 23% of auto collisions involved cell phones (Texting and driving safety).” Teenagers are already distracted behind the wheel when we add the influence of alcohol not only will the teen be a danger to their self but they will also be a danger to others on the road. One quote that truly sparks the fire in this argument is “it is not (usually) alcohol that kills, it is drunken driving that kills (Eastman).” This quote truly speaks volume in this argument because when you look at this statist of car accidents from the CDC “In 2014, 2,270 teens in the United States ages 16–19 were killed and 221,313 were treated in emergency departments for injuries suffered in motor vehicle crashes.1 That means that six teens ages 16–19 died every day from motor vehicle injuries” you can see that teens have a high risk of getting in accidence because of so many distractions from texting, listening to music, or when they are with a group of friends, now when we add alcohol as a contributing factor we will see that no one will be safe on the road, because in the quote mentioned above alcohol is not what kills it the drunken driver and when we drink we lose the mental capacity of what makes sense and what doesn’t we believe we can do things we…

In a recent year, people aged 16 to 24 were involved in 28 percent of all alcohol-related driving accidents, although they make up only 14% of the U.S. population.Young people are also over-represented in drinking driver injuries and deaths.Fortunately, driving accidents have been declining among young people, just as they have among the general population. And deaths associated with young drinking drivers (those 16 to 24 years of age) are down dramatically, having dropped 47% in a recent 15-year period.…

Because decision-making abilities are clouded and an adolescent has not reached full maturity, drunk driving accidents are more common. As a drinking teenager who may not want to be reprimanded by their parents or guardians, they may find themselves driving home drunk due to fear of calling for a ride. It can be argued that if alcohol consumption was legalized at a younger age there would be less drunk driving due to less fear of becoming…

Lowering the drinking age to 18 will have serious consequences such as the increase in traffic fatalities. According to the Foundation for a Drug-Free World, “in the United States in 2007, the death toll from teenage drunk-driving accidents was 1,393 – nearly four fatalities every day of the year.” (Drinking and Driving, 2006-2015). At such youthful age, these teens are not responsible enough to know that they should not drink and drive. They assume that they are perfectly fine after consuming alcohol, and thinks that it is ok for them to drive, until they find themselves inside a morgue. It was stated by the American Journal of Public Health that “the lower minimum legal drinking age was followed by increases in sale and consumption of alcohol…

The CDC states that “every day, 28 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver.” This means that a person dies every 51 minutes due to an individual’s irresponsibility with alcoholic beverages. In the year of 2014, “the highest percentage of drunk drivers was for drivers ages 21-24” (madd.org). People on the opposing side may argue that individuals under the age of 21 already drink, therefore an increase in the age would not change anything. While this may be true, any step in the right direction is worth it if it can possibly save an innocent life. The above statistic shows that if the drinking age were raised the amount of vehicular accidents related to alcohol would decrease. It also illustrates the fact that adults under the age of 25 that consume alcohol have reduced decision-making skills. Therefore, this demonstrates another reason the drinking age should be increased to…

“…31.2% among persons aged 18 to 20, and peaked among person 21 to 25 at 45.4%” (Harris 130). Teens aged eighteen to twenty are less likely to be involved with alcohol, however, lowering the drinking age would increase the percentage of young drinkers. The chances of a teenager being able to drive to any store, including stores that are specifically designed to sell alcoholic beverages, would increase. This increase would also cause more accidents if the teen was already intoxicated or drove a vehicle while drinking. More intoxicated drivers on the road can lead to fatal accidents that can alter the lives of many individuals. Some individuals do not realize the risks of driving while…

To begin, there are many people under the age of twenty one getting alcohol-related offences and they have no idea how much their bodies can handle or the effect it has on them. For example, a high school kid is leaving a party and it’s the first time they have ever consumed an alcoholic beverage. They have two beers which would more than likely take them over the Florida limit of .08 and get pulled over. The student would not feel intoxicated but would get a D.U.I. When a person is under the age of twenty one I believe it would be an unfair consequence to never be able to drive again. If they had an alcohol-related offence without the knowledge of how alcohol affects their minds and bodies. People under the age of twenty one also have not matured or have a lot of experience with this substance, and as they get older they are able to recognize their limitations.…
