The Story of Edin Subašić’s Life
On April 11th 2003 at 10:30 PM, Edin’s mother, Dalila Subašić gave birth to Edin at Misericordia hospital on floor 4. It was the happiest day of Dalila’s and his father, Hajrudin’s life. When he was born his weight was 9 pounds and 11 ounces, because he was supposed to be due on April 1st or 2nd he had gotten too big and Dalila had to get a c-section. Edin was so big that when he was born he had to wear 3 month old clothes! Also, Hajrudin had cut the cord when he was born. The hospital was so close that they walked there! Everybody in his family thought he was a nice baby, so life was peaceful for everyone so far. He went to preschool but nothing else really happened.
When Edin turned 6 something big happened… On April 29th 2009, Dalila had given birth to a daughter! Edin’s new little sister named Ayla was born at 7 pounds 11 ounces. Edin was at his grandparents at the time, Sadmira and Sead Cehić. Edin’s grandparents drove him to Royal Alexandra hospital where his only sibling was born. He got to hold his sister for the first time before his family drove to his grandparents’ house where the rest of his family came to see the new addition to the family. He soon learned how annoying a little sister could be.
Through grades 1-4 Edin got average grades and there was no problem. When he got to grade 5 his writing and other academic skills exponentially increased, he got all A’s on core subjects and aced all of his spelling tests. When he got to grade 6 he got even better grades! He was very interested in Social Studies and politics so he always excelled in it. He even got 100% on a test he didn’t even study for! At the end of the year he got 92% on Math and 88-91% on the other core subjects. This made it so he could apply to be enrolled in honours classes and he might have had an advantage as he has very good relations with his Social Studies teacher who might have been a curriculum

First, when I look at the authors push to get an education I see in Richard Rodriguez’s essay that he was very motivated. He started as a young boy with an accent striving to learn more and attain knowledge whenever he could because he knew of the benefits. In the story Rodriguez says that he shifted away from family life to study more and learn more from his teachers. He wanted school rather than his uneducated family. In contrast, Mike Rose clearly didn’t want to be in school, he wanted an easy way out of things. Rose explains he was put in vocational classes by accident, but decided to stay in the classes with the lower level students. He explains how the teachers could care less about the student’s education which affected Rose because he saw himself and everyone as being average.…

I often see him bullying his friends, pushing them break, hitting them whenever he likes and also annoying them by singing loudly in class. He is quite sensitive when someone scolds him, but he never cries. He communicates well with other students and teachers. Moreover, he enjoys Physical Education (PE) and Dance most, as he gets to be more active and he works finely in group activities. He seems to hate English and this is maybe due to the way Ms K delivers her lessons which may not be able to conducive to his kinaesthetic learning style. The majority of the students in 2C class also seem to have a kinaesthetic style. According to David Glen “Almost certainly, you were told that your instruction should match your students learning styles…Now four psychologists argue that you were told wrong. There is no strong scientific evidence to support the “matching” idea…”…

Some people believe that the first steps establish the future within the child, but my perspective seemed to reveal no hints. He showed many major disadvantages as a child. At birth, he came out 7 pounds and 9 ounces, which did not show much promise. Growing up was very difficult for him as he displayed many signs of being lazy. My view of his childhood was painfully tragic. Every step he took seemed to introduce more pain to me. Most of his days were spent laying down in his crib because, his size brought his inability to move around. He was absolutely not your typical healthy baby and, overweight was a understatement. Me spending every day with him became more and more depressing. It seemed as though the more he grew, the more hope I had…

As a memoir, this is truly unique. It must have taken tremendous effort to write this often painful recollection of your own life. Yet, the exercise of exploring the dynamics of such a dysfunctional family, and the parental unit as a separate entity analyzed by a daughter, had to be a revelation and a healing experience. One merit of the work is the strength of character bred into these children, celebrated and seen in…
