Figuring out who you are is hard, but for Edmond Dantes, it's even worse. So many things have happened to him, shaping his character from person to person. Being in prison for so long took all the optimism and hope he had when he first came off the ship. Being someone else after he escaped so people wouldn't know who he was changed him. He started acting like the person he was pretending to be and less like himself and how he was before prison. His life became revolved around the aspect of revenge and not letting anyone figure out who he was, and slowly his identity was forgotten behind all the masks he put on.
Before, he was wronged by all the envious people around him, and before he was imprisoned, he was young, and his life was just starting out. His hardships were minor, and his dreams were high. His aspirations were just coming within reach, being the captain, getting married, and finally being able to see his father. He was about to be truly happy. The envious people that didn't want to see him succeed made all that go away. Before prison, he was young, finally going to get all the responsibilities of an adult and it was taken away. He knew he was innocent and thought that he had no enemies that would ever do this to him. When Abbe Faria told him that it may have been Danglers who had done this to him he started to realize all that was going on around him. This is when he truly started to change. His need for vengeance against those who wronged him became more evident. When he escaped and was on the island he had to change his identity so people wouldn't know he escaped. His trip to visit caderousse was also under another identity. He changed his identity to give back to those who helped him but also make people who wronged him pay.
