Edmund Halley was born on November 8, 1656, in Haggerston, London, England and died on January 14, 1742, in Greenwich, United Kingdom. His father, Edmund Halley Sr. was a prosperous soapmaker and property owner. Halley had two siblings, Humphrey Halley and Katherine Halley. Edmund invented the diving bell and came up with an early working model of a magnetic compass, but he is most famously known for his discovery of Halley’s Comet.
