Out For a Drink Dilemma

The following case study focuses on identifying and describing how community values and expectations influence personal values and dispositions. Complete the following for this assignment:

Complete the guiding questions to explain your approach and rationale.

Answer the following four questions to complete the case study. Each response should be at least 150-250 words in length.

1. If you were Linda, how would you handle the situation?

I understand everyone wants to have a little fun in their life, however if I were Linda in this case I would stop drinking right as soon as I noticed the students. I personally would have never drank at a place that any of my students could have shown up to in the first place. The teacher should avoid drinking in public places to avoid the possibility of violating the law and meeting up with students and/or their families.Even if that means going to the next town over or just throwing the parties at your own home. In the given situation, the teacher should have left the bar immediately. Mrs. Linda may be placing herself in a position where students/parents/community might misinterpret, even well intended, actions. The potential for charges of inappropriate conduct are significantly increased. No need to create drama where it does not need to be avoid it to begin with is the best solution.

2. Which ethical theory or theories support your approach? Why?

Morale rule is a specific guideline for action that justifies our moral judgments and actions in our everyday lives. Moral rules tell us what we ought to do and are often established by tradition, religion, laws, etc.This is a morale rule because anything that teacher does within his/her community where she teaches can be seen or heard by her students. The teacher’s rapport with the students could imply approval of behavior, it is sending a mixed message. If the teacher is sitting their drinking the students are going to believe it is okay for them to do it also. An educator should try to refrain from using, possessing and/or being under the influence of alcohol, tobacco especially if their students are in their presents. Pretty much what you do behind close doors is your own business providing it is legal. It is better your students do not know what your personal live is like.

3. Which domain (dispositions or law) does your response lean more closely toward? Why?

The teacher must be “cognizant of the influence of educators upon the community at large, obey local, state and national laws” (Code of Professional Responsibility for Educators). So if they as teachers are indeed breaking any laws and they are willfully showing students then they the students will believe it is okay and that is not what we want from educators to teach wrongfull things. I has been believed for many many years pretty much historically, parents and school officials have maintained that a teacher cannot lead two lives--one as a role model in school and another as a private citizen. It was assumed that one who chose a career in teaching surrendered a substantial measure of individual privacy. The sacrifice of individual freedom was a necessary adjunct to the overriding goal of guiding the nation’s youth to moral ground that was equal to or above the standards of the community (Hooker,1994).

4. How does this situation depict how community values and expectations influence personal values and dispositions?
The teacher’s behavior at the bar could be embellished and/or exaggerated through photos, videos,text messages etc. creating a negative image of the teacher in the wider community. The teacher’s reputation may be permanently scarred. Even though this may or may not be a one time thing it could be put out there that these kids see her there all the time remember false accusations. And even if it is false we have already addressed what those can do to someones career real fast. Should the teacher drive away from the bar intoxicated what does that teach the children and what happens if she get into a car accident, the teacher could be held responsible for injuries or loss of life. Under the worst of circumstances, the teacher could be arrested, lose her job, her driver’s license and her teaching certificate for violating the law, the Code of Professional Responsibility for Educators and the public’s trust.
