Since there has been an increase in births outside marriages, single mothers have taken the mother’s and father’s role by working to provide for the children then having to come home to parent, cook and clean. But even when there are births while married only about 36 percent of mothers stay at home with their children that are under the age of 6. The impact this creates is a more stressful environment for the children. Both parents always working, less time is being spent parenting and bonding with the children. For both the mother and father this is not easy on them either.…

McLanahan concludes that children who are born to educated women are gaining more resources to their every day lives. The more educated the family is, the more they are able to receive. Vise versa, the children from less educated mothers and families are gaining less resources and are unable to move forward. Education within women, particularly single moms are responsible for the changes in family formation. I concluded from McLanahan’s reading that educated mothers seem to make more of an impact on their children than educated fathers. Highly educated women are responsible for the changes in family formations and the success of their own children. Women with lower incomes tend to have children that mimic their habits within school and life. Poor mothers create less motivated children, and vise…

In the article, “A Mother’s Day Kiss-Off,” author Leslie Bennetts claims that men often leave women with the responsibilities of children and the home to manage on their own. Bennetts believes that this is why American mothers are so angry with their situations in life. She argues that while American culture praises stay-at-home mothers, one income is often not enough to sustain a family. Bennetts also believes that women sacrifice their livelihoods too much in order to fill the role of a mother. While Bennetts strongly justifies the reason for women’s indignation, her overuse of emotional language invalidates much of the article with generalizations and unreliable facts.…

Due to capitalism, both men and women have to work to support the family. Hochschild’s begins her article with Instant Quaker Oats cereal advertisement. “We see a mother pressing her son to eat more efficiently at home. This efficiency seeking in transferred from men to women, from the workplace to the home, and from adult to children” (184). In this advertisement, the mother makes the breakfast for her son within ninety seconds. This provides the mother more time to work and make money. By taking care the work and the family at the same time, women are gaining their social position. Financial independent makes women do not have to rely on men and they can make decisions that follow their wishes. The advertisement indicates that women are jumping from the frying pan of patriarchy into the fire of capitalism by taking care of their growing children and working at the same time. Women’s social statuses have changed significantly by having an efficiency lifestyle. Before, women’s roles are giving birth to children or taking care of families, but now working and making money to support families. In Kristof and WuDunn’s essay, she introduces “women aren’t the problem but the solution. The plight of girls in no more a tragedy than an opportunity” (209). Women are fortunate enough to gain back their knowledge from their previous job, by joining the workforce and contributing financially for their family. Motherhood is not a paid job; there are no raises or benefits. By working, mothers receive a different kind of fulfillment, they get praised and paid. Mothers are admired and respected after having newborn children and rejoining the workforce because they are able to balance not only being a new mother, but also committing part of the day to work. Anna Quindlen, in “Off to Work She Should Go,” believes that if your mother has been micromanaging your homework since you were 6, it’s hard to feel any pride of ownership when you do well. By doing so, the child can’t learn from their mistakes and disappointments (483). Stay at home mothers tend to be overbearing with their children. As a result, children will grow up not knowing how to accomplish different situations on their own. Mothers who work part time can still guide their children in the right direction without doing everything for them. This gives the mother time away from her children, forcing them to handle different problems by themselves. Typically, mothers who work full time feel guilty that they are missing out on raising their child. However, working part time can save women from that stress. Mothers can be an employee for half of the day, knowing that they will spend the remainder of the day with their…

Why Do Women Get Paid Work

Since the proportion of mothers participating in the paid workforce has increased dramatically over recent years, women in the workforce have emphasized that the main problem they find the hardest is finding the balance between work and family life. As a result, a great deal of research attention has been paid to the impact of mother's employment on family life and on the wellbeing of children and parents. Research shows evidence that women continue to bear primary responsibilities for home and child care in spite of their entry in the labor force (Berardo, Shehan, & Leslie, 1987; Pleck, 1985).…

The fact of this is: it is society that has carried the trend of the mother being the nurturer and the father being the worker. While this may be daunting to many women, it is not a required fact of life. Women can be the people working while the men are at home nurturing. This old tradition acts as another “phantom” women must surmount in order for them to become prominent figures in the workplace.…

    The Girl Effect Analysis

    • 5 Pages

Thousands of years before, males are the dominant of their families, and their wives are just their appendants. These changes shift women’s emphasis from families to the whole communities. As well-known, women are much emotional than men, which means, they can bring more “love” to society. The word “love” means morality and peace. Just as the example given in D.Kistof and WuDunn’s essay that, “women are the key to ending hunger in Africa” (p.211). women’s power is more than benefiting economic, it at the same time disseminates their thoughts to public, something that men cannot think of. Whereupon, the inadequacies of society have been fixed by that. That is the key to the morality and to perfect our world which is a progress due to capitalism. However, everything has two sides, and the problems are always inevitable. The meaning of “love” changes simultaneous with the diffuses of morality. This shift to a family side is the changing ideas about being “good parents”. While shifting to society is the changing of the importance of everyone’s lives. As Hochschild discusses, “Family and community life have meanwhile become less central as places to talk and relate, and less the object of collective rituals” (p.186). When discussing family, it always comes with a whole that everyone is bounded with each other. The bound is called “love” and it used to be the…

Asking who needs motherhood is a bit of an understatement, in my opinion. Instead we should go deeper into it. What needs motherhood and why? Is it people, males, females, society or the planet as a whole? In the essay “Motherhood: Who Needs It?” written by Betty Rollin in 1970, I find so many unanswered questions and issues and my goal now is to find the answers to them. What is motherhood? Why exactly do, or don’t, we need the myth? Should it even be considered a myth at all? How does it affect us in todays society?…

    Analyzed Gender Roles

In this essay, I will demonstrate how unchallenged specialized gender roles ignored the limits of women in domestic roles, creating a high disproportion of workload on mothers. These gender roles continued into the modern era where women fulfilled these gender roles even after gaining working rights. Many families faced the challenge of finding their balance between taking care of their children, running the household and working full time jobs. This balance has only become more strenuous for families due to economic and social pressures. The economic conditions are not stable enough where a wife can finally depend on their husbands and the social conditions put pressure on mothers to take care of their children, housework and uphold their…
