Educating Rita-Characters
Main characters Rita and Frank are the only two characters whom we see on stage, though other people are referred to by both of them. We hear about Denny, Rita's husband, about Julia, Frank's partner, and about Trish, Rita's flatmate, who attempts to kill herself. But it is Rita and Frank whom the audience gets to know best.

Rita: Rita is a working-class, twenty-six-year-old hairdresser who has taken the decisive step of enrolling on a literature course at the Open University. It has been a difficult decision as it means that she has to break away from the restrictions imposed on her by her husband and by the community in which she lives and works. Indeed, Rita's choice is a stark one: it is between starting a family, which Denny wants, or studying. In deciding to study and become more educated and culturally aware, Rita changes her life completely. She gradually becomes absorbed by culture and literature. It is only after her flatmate attempts suicide that she begins to realise that art and literature cannot provide all the answers. However, she decides to continue as a student and finally passes her examination.

Frank: Frank is a university lecturer in English Literature with a drink problem. He has had one failed marriage and his present relationship wit Julia is not an easy one. However, he does appear to have a comfortable middle-class lifestyle and has achieved some minor success as a poet. His job, nevertheless, bores him and, in fact, by the end of the play, he has been sent away to Australia by the university authorities because of his drunken behaviour. Rita breezes into his life like a breath of fresh air; the story of the play is the story of their developing and changing relationships both as teacher and student and on a more personal

During World War II, the Franks and the Van Daans were hiding in a small area of two to three rooms, with a single window, in the attic of an office building in Amsterdam. In her diary, Anne refers to it as the "secret annex." For two years, these close quarters serve as a shelter and protection for the families against the Nazi enemy. While in hiding, problems and the characters' true natures evolved, revealing their differing personalities and value systems. Anne Frank, a young Jewish girl who writes a diary of her experiences during World War II, tells about the major characters in the play. The two characters that I chose to compare were Otto Frank, Anne's father and the only survivor of the group hiding, and Mr. Van Daan, Otto Frank's Jewish associate.…

In some ways, I think the Educating Rita does have a happy ending. This is due to many incidents throughout the play which shows Frank and Rita can have a good life and can now move on with it. At the beginning of the play, Rita says that she “wants to learn everything”. By the end of the play, she fulfils this dream as she passes her exams and can now be seen as an “educated woman”. She can now be herself, a working class hairdresser, yet have an education at the same time, which she didn’t think she could have before, as she thought she was “out of step.” Furthermore, nearing the end of the play, Frank gives Rita a dress that he bought for her. “Well, it’s er – it’s a dress really”. This is significant as she says that she’s not going to buy a new dress until she has learnt everything and passed her exams. When Frank gives Rita the dress, he says it’s for an “educated woman friend” of his. Therefore, this could show that the play has a happy conclusion as Rita has done what she wanted to do and, with Franks help, learnt “everything.” Also, Frank gains self-confidence. This is because Rita convinces him that he is a good teacher. “I came to tell you you’re a good teacher.” This shows that Frank, although a few hiccups along the way, gained a lot throughout the play. This shows…

Good Morning Good Afternoon Miss McCarthy and class. I will be discussing the novel Looking for Alibrandi by Melina Marchetta. The novel, Looking for Alibrandi is charged with emotional energy. Throughout the novel it shows cultural differences and a lack of communication and understanding between the family. This book is written as both a social and cultural analysis of Josephine Alibrandi’s life,, Josephine Alibrandi is 17 years old and comes from third generation Italian Australian. She feels caught in a claustrophobic trap between family lives obsessed with tradition, a strict disciplined Catholic school and trying to find herself and her position as a teenage girl. Throughout the novel Josie is constantly changing her views on people, and experiences her share of emotional upheaveful as she comes to realize that a perfect world consists of more than just gorgeous hairstyles, rich boyfriends and social privileges. It is a common representation throughout the novel that Josie Alibrandi is a selfish and egotistical girl whose internal angst and whose conflict with others all stemmed from her expectations that others should conform to meet her needs. This can be seen in her interactions with her close family members Christina, Nonna and Michael. She also selfish towards her friends John and Jacob.…

The first character which is Carla is seen talking on the phone with a random guy she met at a bar which she cannot seem to remember. This is proof that Carla is some beauty if she is attracting men at a bar. Another part in the play Carla references that she is modeling meeting with Ralph Lauren, this is more proof that Carla is attractive if she has a modeling meeting. The second character, Bethany is a very hardworking and busy woman with a high demanding job. Since Bethany is always working she decides to take a break from work and heads to the beach. The theme of ‘Into the World’ is clearly shown in the early scenes of ‘Educating Rita’. Rita is first introduced as an outspoken and uneducated character, who is trapped by her working class life and doesn’t belong. She decides to go to university as a release from her unhappy life. Rita believes that having an education will provide her with a better world, where she can find herself and make her own choices, “I wanna find myself first, discover myself.” Rita looks up to her tutor Frank believing he has the perfect life, although he thinks differently, he views his job and life as a prison, so he turns to drinking alcohol, “Four pints of weak Guiness and I can be as witty as Wilde”.…

The transitional journey often can be difficult and challenging. The two protagonists, Rita and Frank, undergo a transformation process involving personal growth and self-awareness. In Act 1 Scene 5, Rita emphasis how important the course is to her as shown in the quotes, “I’m busy enough findin’ myself, let alone findin’ someone else” and “It’s not takin’ the place of life, it’s providin’ me with life itself”. This shows Rita’s struggles and difficulties in “finding herself” but also has to face disagreements in the family. Books and window in Frank’s study is symbolic for the barrier between Rita’s current world and the world of Academia in which she is “finding herself”. When Denny burnt all the Chekhov books, it symbolises Rita’s problems in the family and Denny’s disagreement of Rita seeking “life” in education. During the play, Rita replied Frank whilst “standing up”, when Frank curiously asked, “I mean about your husband”. This acts as a metaphor which represents Rita’s willpower and determination to move into a “new world”. In contrast to Rita, Frank sees moving into the world as a negative experience as he resorts to drinking to escape his problems and responsibility. Alcohol acts as a symbol which represents a mask to cover-up his problems.…

Significant experiences in people’s lives provide opportunities for growth and development. Going ‘into the world’ means moving from familiar experiences to new horizons. When going from familiar experiences to new ones, obstacles are usually overcome before being totally successful. Individuals might be given advice and/or guided through the transformation to reaching new horizons. Great rewards and opportunities also come about while going through the process of growth and development. The script of Educating Rita, by Willy Russel, about the transformation of a woman going into the world, is great proof for the persuasion of the statement, as well as a visual text from the Sunday telegraph called, Two Boys in Redfern.…
