Topic: People work because they need money to live. What are some other reasons that people work? Discuss one or more of these reasons. Use specific examples and details to support your answer.

"People will work because they need money to live." Though I do believe that there are a lot of other reasons for people to work. I will enumerate each of these reasons in the following paragraphs.

According to me, all of us have an inbuilt burning desire to SUCCEED. Success is a combination of professional achievements and then earning money as a result of these. Even if one of these components is missing, one will not derive true pleasure of having succeeded. Thus it is a big chain of events, one enjoys one's work, and the moment one's work is not to complete a job but an enjoyment, and one works even harder. More hard work over the long run inevitably leads to professional excellence which in turn translates in monetary benefits.

Secondly, when a person works hard, he contributes directly or indirectly to society. This feeling that "I have some worth and am contributing to betterment of society" is very important for mental happiness. Being an orthopedic surgeon myself, I have experienced this numerous times. If a patient comes to me with a fracture and then goes home walking, the pleasure I derive is phenomenal even if I don’t derive substantial monetary benefit from this.

I also want to add that work gives money and in this day and age, even for social work one might want to do, one needs funds. Money thus earned can be given for various charitable causes thus giving a tremendous sense of satisfaction and well being.

I therefore strongly believe that one of the important reasons that people work is for money for themselves and for their family, there are many, significantly more important reasons for working and these are the ones which actually keep life

The most widespread proof that working can shape a character has been instigated by many of our parents. In most households it is common for the kids to have certain duties or chores. Even though most kids, like me for example, don’t enjoy or take pleasure in work, many will argue that it was very beneficial and a lot of experience was gained. Even John Updike, the author of “Hoeing” said, “How many souls have been formed by this simple exercise.” He conveys that doing simple tasks motivates us to do other work that perhaps gave us the attitude and drive to continue to do work.…

First of all, being happy with a job is more important than having a high salary because money cannot buy happiness. If we cannot enjoy working and indulging in what we do, it means we gain nothing even though we are earning a high salary. Most people spend about or more than half of a day at work. It would be a torture to be stuck in a load of job which we never enjoy. On the other hand, one can gain self satisfaction if one is doing what one really wants even if one does not make a lot of money.…

So where do we go from here? Actually, it really depends on the person’s personality and attitude. A competitive employee, one that draws satisfaction from every achievement and “well-done job”, would most like agree with Kerns and Larson. This is chiefly due to the fact that people who are used to excelling are people who would normally find being productive, having a lot of things done beforehand and receiving recognition for such act, as a source of happiness. But to think of this on a wider range perspective, we’ll realize that such form of happiness and contentment is very short-term. It is something that would only last while you’re at that moment, and will eventually diminish. These are the kind of workers…

When you ask people why they work, a lot of them will say that they work for money. People usually work to get the things that they need to live. Sometimes money is the only reason why people work. Once, for example, I asked my mother why she works despite it being hard. She said that she can get personal satisfaction through working. Also, she works to perform rewarding and meaningful activities. In addition, she works for companionship. I think that my mother is an example of why people work for more substantial reasons besides money.…
