Advantages of Co-Education
There are many advantages and hardly any disadvantages in the co-educational system of education. The first advantage is that if boys and girls are taught together, there will not be any need for opening separate schools for boys and girls. Co-education is an economical system, because both boys and girls can study in same schools and they can be taught by the same staff.
Secondly, boys and girls have to live together in the society in their later lives and if they are taught together from the very beginning, they can understand each other well. The girls will not feel shy in the presence of boys.
Again if they are taught together, it will create a sense of healthy competition among them. In this manner, they will work hard and pay serious attention to their studies. A feeling of comradeship will also develop between the boys and girls. The boys will not indulge in in eve-teasing and the girls will bot be afraid of boys. Thus they will have a balanced development of their personality.
Thus if co-education is introduced, there will be no problem of discipline among the students. In the western countries, there is no separation between boys and girls in the schools.
Dis-advantages of Co-Education
Of course certain conservative people criticize the system of co-education. According to them, this system is against our tradition. They also fear that co-education will develop immoral relationships between boys and girls. They believe that in this system both the boys and girls will be spoilt. But these arguments do not hold much water.

It is proven that students in single-sex schools feel less pressure than their coeducational counterparts. This decrease in pressure results in many advantages for both males and females. Without the distraction of impressing females, males are less competitive and more cooperative. In addition, girls are more willing to speak in public, and exhibit higher levels of confidence and self-esteem. With this decrease in pressure, students will enjoy the learning environment more. This results in an increased attendance frequency because students look forward to school, rather than dreading to attend. Single sex education increases opportunities for leadership as well. In a female single sex environment, girls hold leadership positions that they might not have the opportunity to hold in a coeducational environment. Furthermore, males may be less inhibited to get involved and assume leadership roles in the absence of females. Another benefit of single-sex education is the ability to tailor the environment towards either males or females. This is advantageous because some studies indicate that females learn better in warmer temperature. While males tend to perform better in cooler environments. If this is true, then even the temperature of a single-sex classroom can be set to optimize the learning of either male of female students. The author also explains the opposition to single-sex…

There has been much discussion throughout the eighties on the benefits of co-education for girls and boys. Almost all of the research was carried out in other countries under a variety of educational structures; not surprisingly the findings varied from country to country. We have always been firmly convinced that genuine co-education is the most natural and the best form of education.A report, commissioned be Minister for Education to look at the effects of co-education, is to be published soon. The Irish Times , in November last year published a summary of the main findings. It states that the report has concluded that girls from co-educational schools do best in the Leaving Certificate Examination. They were shown to do better than any other category of pupil. They do better than girls from single-sex schools and also better than boys from all schools. We were thrilled with these findings because we sometimes encounter parents who believe otherwise; our experience over the years confirms the findings of this report. We have always known that our results, for girls and boys, were second to none. The report also highlights many of the other benefits of co-education. It notes, for example that pupils felt co-education also leads to improved social and personal development. Both girls and boys in co-ed school said they were more self-confident, well-balanced and better equipped to make new friends than their counterparts in single-sex schools. It s our experience that friendships develop in a very natural way in co-ed schools. This happens because there are so many activities, societies and clubs in the school in which girls and boys take part in a pleasant, well-supevised environment.…
