The education before the 1800’s was faulty at best. For the schools that were present they were under funded, of poor quality, and there was no general standard for education. Americans gradually became aware that there were many benefits to improving public education and that a change was necessary. The education reform began with Horace Mann, he was known as “Father of American Education.”. Horace believed that children should be molded into what the teachers and officials wanted them to be. He demoralized corporal punishment and established state teacher training programs.
Another prominent leader in the education reform was Emma Willard. Willard establish the curriculum consisting of math, physics, history, and geography.
She also trained female teachers to help them branch out from their household duties. Willard issued her book Plan for Improving Female Education, this book became the fundamental point for the public education in New York for females. Emma opened a girls' school, the Troy Female Seminary, designed to prepare women for college and life outside the home.
Mary Lyons was also an eminent figure in the education reform she founded the first college for women called Mount Holyoke Female Seminary. Mary Lyon is an educational pioneer, providing women with access to higher and better education than they ever had before. Her work is still being carried on by the students and faculty of her school (Bio.com).
There are many successes that came out of the education reform such as, the first women's college was formed by Mary Lyons, women were also now able to further their education and step outside just doing work in the home. Another favorable outcome was Sunday School was initiated for the lower class to learn more about religion and education. One failure to come out of the education reform was Joseph Hale tried to coerce the students to follow the educators and parents blindly and without question and many refused to follow without questions.
