After 13 grueling months of extensive review of past education studies and plans, specifically the EDCOM, the Medium Term Philippine Development Plan (MTPDP 1999-2004), Philippines Education Sector Study (1998) and `Education for All' Assessments (EFA 2000), among others; marathon meetings and workshops; and consultations with key persons in the system, the Presidential Commission on Educational Reform (PCER) has identified nine (9) recommendations, seen as ripe for reform. The reform proposals were formulated based on the clustered priority areas of concern as specified in Executive Order 46 dated 07 December 1998, later on conflated into six (6), as follows: financing; governance; information technology, science, math and other technologies; medium of instruction; quality assurance; and teacher development and welfare.…

Our Lady of Fatima University Valenzuela, Philippines Our Lady of Fatima University Valenzuela, Philippines ABSTRACT The world is changing so fast that in order for schools and universities to cope with new innovations, they should keep at pace with the tempo of societal changes and technological progress. The schools of today should participate in the educational and social revolution. Thus, the curriculum in Philippine schools today has to be geared to the rapid societal changes and the new responsibilities for the new breed of Filipinos. The three most important sectors of society that give direct input to the improvement of the curriculum are the academe (institutions), the government, and the industries (both public and private companies). Some government institutions, such as the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Department of Education (DepEd), are directly involved in upgrading the curricular programs of learning institutions. They oversee and control the operations of schools, colleges and universities. INTRODUCTION Curriculum is a broad set of experiences that students go through during the entire time they are in school.…

Poverty has become a major problem among Filipinos. In fact, even before the government grants the enhanced K – 12 program, Filipino parents were already having a hard time to send their children to school within the 10 – year curriculum. How much more for 12 years education? In this regard, I agree on Rep. Karlo Nograles’ notion on the said program. Generally, the program is ideal yet unrealistic. It is only ideal in the sense that it could provide quality learning by establishing another 2 – year extension of education. On the other hand, it is unrealistic because of culture. The culture of the Philippines is different from that of the other states who have founded the said program. Additionally, Filipinos have the tendency to easily lose their desire into something that is of a long process. Somehow, we want an instant job not an extended educational system.…
