Part two of The Good Endeavor, sheds light as to why humans struggle with work in our day to day lives. Keller explains how it all roots back to the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve eating of the forbidden fruit, in his opinion, was a test. This opportunity to obey God merely because of who God is and what was asked of them was a sure fail. The author expands, saying because of this and every other fall of man "sin leads to disintegration of every area of life..” this would include work. Every person, job and area of life will have its fall. Not one particular part will be perfect. Keller gives an example from the play Amadeus. Mozart and Salieri, both composers but they each had success in their own. Salieri was envious of the kind of success Mozart had because he was no doubt a prodigy. However,…

Marcelo H. del Pilar was born on August 30, 1850 in the barrio of Kupang, Bulakan. His parents are Julian Hilario del Pilar and Blasa Gatmaitan. Marcelo is a lover of arts that he took and finished his Bachelor of Arts degree in Colegio de San Jose. In 1881, he obtained his law degree in the University of Santo Tomas. Previously, he had disputes over some of the friars because of his nationalistic and liberal ideas that were against the abusive nature of the friars. Del Pilar often stages movements for the overthrow of the friars in the Philippines. In 1882, he founded the nationalistic newspaper Diariong Tagalog. Moreover, Del Pilar sailed to Spain due to the tensions arising between him and the corporation of the friars. While in Spain, he succeeded Lopez-Jaena as the editor-in-chief of the La Solidaridad. Shortly, Del Pilar died in Barcelona on July 4, 1896 - just around one month before the Cry of Pugad Lawin, signaling the start of an armed revolution.…

Editor’s note: The following is the article written by today’s most famous Filipino historian Ambeth R. Ocampo on Jose Rizal’s death. Simply entitled, “The Death of Jose Rizal,” this historical piece by the current head of the National Historical Institute (of the Philippines) could be deemed refreshing and controversial, as it offers several unpopular and unorthodox accounts of what (presumably) transpired on the day of Rizal’s execution. For one thing, it virtually proclaims that Rizal refused to kiss the crucifix before he was executed, thereby negating the claim of other historians (like Zaide) that the national hero even asked for this Catholic sacramental. Happy reading!…

Night, I don't know what vague melancholy, an indefinable loneliness, smothers my soul. It is similar to the profound sadness that cities manifest after a tumultuous rejoicing, to a city after the happiest celebration. Two nights ago, that is, 30 December, I had a frightful nightmare when I almost died.1 I dreamed that, imitating an actor dying on the stage, I felt vividly that my breath was failing and I was rapidly losing my strength. Then my vision became dim and dense darkness enveloped me -- they were the pangs of death. I wanted to shout and ask for help from Antonio Paterno, feeling that I was about to die. I awoke weak and breathless.…

When I wrote the Noli Me Tangere, I asked myself on whether or not courage was a common virtue of the young women of our country. I searched my memory diligently, and recalled one by one all the young women I knew since childhood, only to find out that all the young women I knew since childhood. Only to find out that a few conformed to the ideal I longed for. It is true that there were many who were endowed with amiable disposition, beautiful ways, desirable habits, gentle manners, and modesty, but with it mingled complete deference and obedience to every word and request of the so-called fathers of the soul – as if the soul had any other father but God. This is due to their excessive goodness, humility, or perhaps sheer ignorance. They are like withered plants sown and grown in darkness, having flowers without fragrance and fruits without juice.…

The tenth story of the third day in the Decameron is an exploration of language just as the rest of the book. Within this story, the smallest of words can make the biggest differences in how the themes can be interpreted. The genius of Boccaccio’s writing is that while he may have had different aspirations for the Decameron, the interpretations can be as modern as the Decameron is celebrated.…

Sisa, also known as the mother of thieves, the second most important character in Rizal 's novel, the loving mother of two sons namely Crispin and Basilio.
