Edward Cullen is an individual that is unique and mysterious. For one he is a vampire living in an average city and when exposed to sunlight his skin will sparkle like a diamond. In the novel, Edward Cullen is an angelic, perfect, handsome teennager which seperates him from others. Another unique thing that Edward beholds is that he has the special ability to read people’s mind besides Bella’s. Edwards individuality is an important part of the novel because besides his appearance it attracts Bella to him. His old-fashioned and charming manner and extremely good looks resemble more that of a traditional gentleman than an ordinary high school male. Individuality helps the author build up Edward’s character. Nature is a gothic characteristic that has a much deeper meaning than just the superficial. The novel is set in the city of Forks, Washington, the rainiest town in the United States. The rain creates a gloomy atmosphere that could represent how Edward sees himself, a monster. He warns Bella in the beginning that he’s not a hero, but instead a monster that she would not want to be friends with. However, their passionate attraction didn’t stop Bella from coming closer to him. Edwards takes Bella to the meadow in the woods where he confesses that he is a vampire. The forest also represents safety from the confinement of society. The woods is a place where Edward can be himself and not have
