It was the night of Christmas Eve, the man was making a sculpture of ice. While making the sculpture a woman appeared dancing in the ice shavings falling from the sky. The woman held her hand out appreciating his work and him. He then climbs off of the ladder to see his work but when he accepted how well it was, he accidentally cut Kim. Edward now feeling bad tries to see if Kim is ok but Kim’s ex-boyfriend Jim intervenes telling Edward to leave because he’s a freak and that he was not welcomed. The director Tim Burton then shows Edward from Edward scissorhands cutting his clothes with his hands made of scissors to show a transition in the character to show that he has finally accepted that he will never be normal and that he will never be…
From Edward Scissorhands and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, to Big Fish, director Tim Burton has been proving his amazing capability to weave extraordinary, almost dreamlike worlds. Although many directors use cinematic techniques to show or prove something, Burton clearly has a special gift. Burton’s use of cinematic techniques is very unique compared to other directors. Burton uses lighting, characterization, and music to show the mood of the scene.…
Charlie in the Chocolate Factory, Big Fish, Edward Scissorhands. All famous movies directed by Tim Burton, a dark and mysterious director. Burton has an odd sense of style, which is used to captivate characters emotions and sense suspicions. Burton is a talented director and takes many things into consideration before directing a film. In many films directed by Burton, he uses shots and framing, non-diegetic sound, and camera angles to create mood.…
The theme of deeply ingrained values is also present in A Nightmare on Elm Street…

Kim is rude and embarrassed at first but once Jim showed Kim who he really was she instantly knew she loved Edward. The legal issues presented in this film are as follows: the effects of the media on citizens to ridicule lawsuits such as Stella Liebeck’s, the effects of limiting the amount of money that can be awarded by a jury in damages to the plaintiff otherwise known as caps on damages, such as the case of Colin Gourley, the corporations’ influence and power in judicial elections as well as the extent they will go to as experienced by Oliver Diaz, and the effects of mandatory arbitration in the work place, battled by Jamie Leigh Jones, as well as in consumers’ lives. All of these issues are presented to the viewer in order to prove an overall point of tort reform. Tort reform should be questioned and researched by citizens the film suggests, by encouraging a…
I have chosen the film Forest Gump to write about my understanding of film. It was released in 1994 and directed by Robert Zemeckis, produced by Wendy Finerman and Steven Tisch. The movie based on the written screenplay of Eric Roth from the novel of Winston Groom. It has several well-known, talented actors such as Tom Hanks, Sally Fields, Robin Wright and Gary Sinise to name a few. The production cost of fifty-five million and it grossed six hundred and seventy-seven million worldwide. Forrest Gump won six Oscars at the Academy Awards for this display of artistry.…
In the film Night of the Living Dead there were many unimaginable, grotesque things that are taking place throughout the film. We know that people are afraid of two things, death and the unknown. Johnny began by badgering his sister, Barbara just like he did when they were children by saying “they’re coming to get you Barbara” while visiting their father’s gravesite. This shows that Barbara, even as an adult, she is afraid of the unknown. Unbeknownst to Johnny, Barbara was actually attacked by the unknown. Johnny jumps on “the thing” to protect his sister. This is the first sighting of a “thing”. The sighting of the thing connotes fear and death. Barbara runs off and finds safety in a house not far from the graveyard. Barbara meets Ben when he enters the house for safety as well. The house is another connotation of safety and warmth. Ben jumps right in to protection mode because Barbara appear to be in a state of shock due to the gory sighting of “the thing” and its attack on her brother.…
Edward Scissorhands is a man built, humanlike cyborg who tries to live along with the complexities of the civilized world. However, his disability of having scissorhands over normal hands, restricts his proper presence in the real world. Thus, he is seen by many as a utility of great compatibility in making their lives a whole lot easier. This puts him as a risk of being unknowingly misled into being their sunshine who grows their plants, rather than people accepting his true identity of being Edward. This film not only characterizes the exploitation of another, but also shows how fast assumptions could be interpreted through appearance; like the eye which cannot view truth without another acknowledging it. Edward’s active ability of harming others with his scissorhands, may put others in an uncomfortable spot when around him. His unpredictable self leaves many wondering whether he will lash out in anger, or come out as a cute puppy who is innocent. Therefore, Edward overall is a victim as well as a…
The next text, Edward Scissorhands, is a romantic fantasy film that tells the story of an artificial man named Edward. Edward is an unfinished creation who, as the title suggests, has scissors for hands. After the death of his creator, Edward has lived in a dark and despairing house, alone, for many years. But after a long amount of time, Edward is taken in by a suburban family, and soon falls in love with their daughter, Kim. Now, due to Edward being, shall we say, different, the people of the town are opposed to his presence in their community. But we’ll focus on that soon enough.…
One can argue that the Civil Rights Movement during the mid-20th century was one of the defining times in our country’s short history. Yes, our national Independence is the root of our history and freedom and is the beginning of our amazing country, but the Civil Rights movement was a major stepping-stone to what we, as a country and people, have become and believe in today.…
Some conceal their differences while some use their differences to an advantage. From a young age Burton has directed unique films. A great example of this is his 1982 Hansel and Gretel, which aired only once due to the strangeness in its entirety. Burton uses non-diegetic sounds, low key lighting, and long shots in his work to display how one who overcomes his fear of being different has the potential for success.…
The name Frankenstein is most commonly thought of as the name of the monster. Because in modern culture today Frankenstein is thought as the monster. In reality Frankenstein is the last name of the scientist who’s full name is Victor Frankenstein. This new adaptation of Mary Shelley 1818 ‘Frankenstein’ clearly presents that fact for the new generation. So, Victor and Igor go on a journey to create the ever classic Frankenstein’s monster. The movie is titled ‘Victor Frankenstein’ and is set in the 18th century London, England. The director of the film is Paul Mcguigan, who decided to take some creative liberty on the story.…
The film, Ex Machina, brings up the different views one can have on technology and humanity. Ava is the subject being tested by Caleb to see if she can possibly have a consciousness of her own. As a machine, she is highly intelligent but it is uncertain whether she has her own will or if she’s only acting the way she was programmed to. By the end of the film, it can be seen that Ava clearly takes initiative, using her abilities as a female, to get Kyoko on her side, kill Nathan and then leave Caleb to die. Her actions are a sign that if not a consciousness, she has a strong desire to live.…
In the film Ex Machina, Caleb, a programer at a gigantic internet company, is in charge of testing the latest robot, Ava, for artificial intelligence. What he realizes that Ava has been manipulating his emotions and using him to escape the room that she has called home her entire existence. She merely treats Caleb this way to prove to her creator, Nathaniel, that she does, in fact, have artificial intelligence. Ex Machina is being evaluated on whether or not it is an enjoyable film that belongs to the dystopian subcategory of the science fiction genre. In order for a dystopian science fiction film to be considered enjoyable it has to: take place in the future, display the old world and the dated technology alongside the new, the government has to crash or fail and some kind of other system will take over, fights to try and take back what was rightfully theirs, and as an added bonus, it will take place on a different planet.…
