The purpose of this poem is to portray that in our lives, it is our choice where to go, and whatever we choose, it will definitely change our lives. One of the poetic devices he used is symbolism. The roads are used here as symbols of two choices and to the persona it represents which life that he should decide to take. He decides to take the lesser path rather than the popular path which shows that he wants to try something new. The road contributes to the theme because the theme is about choices and our choices in our lives are not just one, but abundant, just like the roads in our world. Another poetic device that Frost used is a paradox. The first paradox in his poem is the title “The Road Not Taken.” It is a paradox because the poem talks about the road that he took and not the one that he did not take. He wants to travel both but he cannot do it because he needs to choose a road to take. This is paradoxical because he chooses to take the one less travel even though the other road seems so nice and perfect to the eyes. This is powerful in the poem because it helps the theme to be more understandable about making choices in our lives.
