Edwin Locke Goal Setting
Goal setting has been a focus in the management and motivation world since Edwin Locke’s research on goal setting and motivation in the late 1960’s (CCN, 2016). Locke’s research has resulted in a template for goal setting called “SMART” (Mindtools, 2011). The goal of this paper is to further discuss the purpose of my leadership development plan utilizing peer-review articles, and credible websites that pertain to each of my SMART goals. I realize that I can be shy when having to communicate with others in large groups. I want to work on my communication skills, such as being more confident and assertive when working with other members of the team so that I will be a better team player and leader. I want to work on my communication skills, such as being more confident and assertive when working with other members of the team so that I will be a better team player and leader.

Specific: I will look for opportunities to join committees within my organization. I will research leadership skills/communication articles to be more assertive and confident when working with others. I will volunteer to be the spokesperson for our Unit Based Forum (UBF) at the next Structured Interdisciplinary Bedside Rounds (SIBR) Committee meeting.

Measurable: The co-chair of the UBF has asked for someone to share information on the progress with the SIBR committee at the upcoming SIBR meeting. I will be designated as the spokesperson for C6 by 1/28/16. And, I will speak to the committee on the designated meeting date.

Attainable: This is an attainable goal because all that is necessary is for me to speak with the co-chair of the UBF and volunteer to be the spokesperson. I will need to be accepted by the leader and prepare myself to be the spokesperson for the UBF at the SIBR

Communication skills are very important to personal or professional life. Manuscriptedit (Dec.2011) says, “Communicating the intended message clearly and effectively is an important skill, which is often a key factor in deciding the chances of success.” I feel I need to improve that skill, maybe because I’m a leaner of the English language - which isn’t my mother one - and I feel like my vocabulary needs to be improved. College is being a great help though but even before I was organising my time and taking a few hours during the week to read a book, newspapers or magazine.…

As a manager, it is my job to communicate effectively to my peers, my employees, and my manager. Also, I must get my team of employees to hit their goals in order to be successful and to hit my goals.
