Section 529 plans can be powerful college savings tools, but you need to understand how your plan works before you can take full advantage of it. Among other things, this means becoming familiar with the finer points of contributions and withdrawals. A little knowledge could save you money and maximize your chances of reaching the educational goals you've set for your children. But keep in mind that all investing involves risk, including the possible loss of principal, and there can be no assurance that any investment strategy will be successful.…

Twenty miles from the Louisiana Border in Carthage, Texas on August 12, 1997 the body of the wealthiest widow of the town Marjorie Nugent was found stuffed into her own deepfreeze by her companion Bernie Tiede. In terms of Nugent’s personality and opinions of her held by the townspeople of Carthage, Hollandsworth writes that “According to most locals, she acted as if she was too good for Carthage,” therefore leaving the town feeling bad for Tiede. After Nugent’s husband died she and Tiede quickly became friends. Nugent soon took Tiede everywhere she went and he ate up the lifestyle she had to offer. With the lifestylet took a strong toll on Tiede. Tiede states that “She showered Tiede with gifts; she gave Tiede three million dollars in exchange for all of his attention. It got worse and worse, she was becoming more possessive of my time and my energy. I felt like I was in prison” (Torre). Tiede enjoyed the lifestyle too much to walk away and it resulted in him murdering Nugent. His sister even stated that “Bernie was living in a dream” (Hollandsworth). The movie Bernie does a poor job at telling the story of Marjorie Nugent’s murder. The movie creates sympathy for Tiede’s actions by portraying his character wrong when hiding the corps of Nugent and making it seem as if the murder was not a premeditated act.…

As early as 1912 – over one hundred years ago – critics were concerned that poor people remained in jail while awaiting trial solely because of their inability to pay even small bail amounts, that bail bondsmen had become too prominent in the administration of justice and that corruption plagued the industry. The Justice Policy Institute (JPI) feels that the bail bonding industry stands in the way of fair and effective pre-trial justice with much backed up evidence.…

In the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth, women became very active in political and social movements. Women played roles that shaped the future of the laws that prohibited women in many ways. Women’s suffrage and women’s role in prohibition are two ways in which women have shaped political and social moments in United States history. Women have never given up on fighting for rights, many times with monetary and social consequences for trying to gain rights they felt belonged to them. Along with gaining those rights women have fought for destigmatizing women and consider them equals to men. This view has been questioned since colonial times; however, no action was taken until almost a century later. One account states that the…

Theoretically the proposed lease seems like a positive proposition for Bridgehampton. However, Marie O’Donnell, Bridgehampton’s General Manager has seen similar proposals rejected by the board in the past. Working with Jim Naruda, the Financial Controller, they discuss an alternate plan to develop a Spa internally. Jim suggests that the opportunity is ripe to expand into the Spa business as the East End has become a sought after destination all year round and not just during the summer season. They decide to conduct an analysis to determine if it would be more beneficial to build a Spa themselves or lease the space to Suncoast.…

Equity warrant bonds are bonds issued with equity warrants attached. Warrants are similar to share options, and give their holder the right but not the obligation to subscribe for a fixed quantity of equity stocks in the company at a future date, and at a fixed subscription price (exercise price). When bonds are issued with warrants, the warrants are detachable and can be sold in the stock market separately from the bonds. Investors might therefore subscribe to an issue of equity warrant bonds, hold the bonds to maturity (as a long-term investment) and sell the warrants in the stock market fairly soon after purchase. Equity warrant bonds are unsecured, and offer a lower coupon rate of interest than similar straight bonds issued at the same time and for the same maturity. In these respects, they are similar to convertible bonds. A feature of equity warrant bonds is that if the warrants are exercised, the money obtained from issuing the new stocks can be used to help redeem the bonds. The debt capital therefore will be replaced, in part at least, by new equity.…
