You may think of poetry is proper, elegant and graceful, but E. E. Cummings truly defies this thought. E. E. Cummings was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1894. He started writing poems at a very young age, though he had not amputated this writing, his poems were strange there is always a meaning to it. As he got older he had a conundrum, he couldn’t find any publishers for his poems, but he had a few adversary. So how did E. E. Cummings defy elegance and grace, he used techniques that made his poem look and sound different.Therefore, those techniques changed the poem to look and/or sound differently. After that, poems are seen in a box or in a visual shape. E. E. Cummings used this, but in a different way. He used his words to form an image related to his poem. In the poem “L(a” it describes a lonesome leaf falling to the terrain(Doc A). The words he used to portray this form an L which might mean loneliness or it may look like the flight the leaf took to the ground. In another poem called “rpophessagr” which is a poem about a grasshopper(Doc B).As a result the letters and words ,which are misplaced, forms of what seems to be the journey the grasshopper has taken.
This meant that he had improper grammar to make the poem sound different when read. For example, in “In Just-” (Doc C) he used spacing in between certain words to show that they have a break between words “whistles far and wee”(Doc C). Also, he had no spacing to make the words sound hasten “eddieandbill” (Doc C). In the poem following “In Just-” (Doc C) we have “O the sun comes up-up in the opening” (Doc D) it explains what life on the farm sounds like with onomatopoeia “champychumpchomps” (Doc D) and alliteration “ree ray rye roh” (Doc D).As a result he used these techniques to change the poem and make it sound like you are on the farm or you’re experiencing
