E.E. Cummings, short for Edward Estlin Cummings, is most known for his love poems and playful use of language. “since feeling is first,” one of his most recognizable poems, was published in1926 (Koelsch). This poem focuses on the role of emotions in people’s lives. It illustrates how important love is and his readers re think their interpretation of love and happiness; and how they are meant to be felt.

His job as a full time poet slowly turned into painting, writing novels and short stories, and also writing playwrights. His main interest was painting (Poetry Foundation). As an adult, Cummings traveled around Europe for many, attributing to his style of painting (Cummings Life). His travels had given him the ideas of his surreal paintings and unique style of poetry. After all of his travels, E.E. Cummings settled in Greenwich Village, New York. Using his talents and his lifelong interests, Cummings worked full time as a painter and poet. A line in the poem “my blood approves,” means, he thinks the love he feels throughout his body is right to be feeling. He believes he should not be feeling any other way. Another form of personification Cummings used, “-the best gesture of my brain is less than your eyelids flutter which says…” he is saying his lover’s eyelid flutter says more than his brain could ever think of saying to her.
