EFFECT OF CHILD ABUSE IN OUR SOCIETY
INTRODUCTION
Child abuse is the physical, sexual, emotional abandonment and/or maltreatment of a child. Child abuse is a latent function of some families that is not intended but happens anyway. Child abuse is often seen differently, depending on various cultures, societies, and groups. We as a society cannot really understand the effect of “Child Abuse in Our Society” unless we have the grasp knowledge of what child abuse actually is. This paper will thus explain in detail, the causes of child abuse, as understanding the causes of abuse is crucial to addressing the problem of child abuse.
This paper will also show the micro and macro effects of child abuse as it relates to our society. However, the physical and psychological effects of child abuse are different from one child to another. Each child exhibits the effects of abuse differently, based on the level of the abuse and how adversely, they have been affected by the abuse. The following are few of the signs and effects of child abuse in our society: “Child experiencing academic difficulties; Aggressive behavior; Alcohol and/or other drug abuse; Anxiety; Attention problems; Bad dreams; Bed wetting; Behavior problems; Chronic pain; Compulsive sexual behaviors; Concentration problems; Dangerous behavior such as speeding; Dehydration; Depression; Dissociative states; Eating disorders; Failure to thrive; Fear or shyness; Fear of certain adults or places; Frequent injuries; Insomnia; Learning problems; Lying; Malnutrition; Panic attacks; Physical symptoms such as headaches and stomach aches; Repeated self-injury; Risky sexual behaviors, (Newton, C.J 2001.)
Children have different levels of resilience or hardiness and different personality attributes, so each child responds differently to similar abusive situations. That is why the lists of warning signs above seem so general. Although these are signs of child
